TEXTBOOK
Speakout Intermediate 2ND EDITION
by Antonia Clare and JJ Wilson
(Pearson Longman, 2015)
*bring this to class every day!
Attendance policy
The expectation is that you will attend all classes on time,
and participate actively in English.
• 2 “penalty-free” absences
• 3 lates = 1 absence. ("Late" = entering the class after it has started and
disturbing other students)
• 20+ minutes late = 1 absence
• 2+ absences,  minus 2% for each unexcused absence, up to a maximum
of -10%.
• Yonsei policy: you must attend 2/3 of the class. More than 8 absences =
F!!!
• Excused Absences: military duty, funerals, illness (not female menstrual
periods). Give me official documentation within ONE week.
NOTE: being absent is not an excuse for missing homework. Check online
or email me if you want to know if there is homework.
Other policies
• Come prepared to class with your textbook and a positive
attitude.
• Arrive on time. If you are late, you will lose participation points.
• You may keep your cellphone on the top of your desk for use as
a dictionary, but you cannot use it for checking messages,
Kakao Talk, etc. (cellphone use = 1 late)
• You may have a soft drink or coffee/tea in the classroom. Please
do not eat or chew gum.
• Be respectful to everyone.
• Have fun!
Introductions
Which way do you think is better? A or B? Why?
A
Anna: Hi, nice to meet you.
Bob: Nice to meet you. What’s
your name?
Anna: My name is Anna. What’s
yours?
Bob. I’m Bob.
B
Anna: Hi, my name is Anna.
Bob: Nice to meet you, Anna. I’m
Bob.
Anna: Nice to meet you, too,
Bob.
Tell the person beside you what you think:
I think A / B is better because…
Yes, I do too, because…
Really? I don’t. I think...
‘B’ is better because…
• it’s shorter
• it’s friendlier (Anna says her name first, rather than them
asking “What’s your name?”)
• it sounds more natural – in English we don’t say “Nice to
meet you” until after we know the other person’s name
Now introduce yourself, using the name you want to use in
this class. (NOT your whole Korean name.)
A: Hi, my name is [I’m] _____.
B: Nice to meet you, _____. I’m _____.
A: Nice to meet you, too, _____.

  • 4. In this course, you will: • Participate in pair, small-group and whole class discussions in class, as well as online forums • Improve your grammar, vocabulary and functional language • Improve listening comprehension • Learn and practice English presentation skills • Do online homework to reinforce your listening, grammar and vocabulary skills
  • 5. Assignments and grading 20% 20% 20% Attendance, attitude, preparedness & participation Homework - textbook & online www.nicolateacher.com/moodle 20% Individual presentation (after midterms) 40% Midterm & final listening/ vocab/grammar tests (10% x 2) final speaking test (20%)
  • 6. TEXTBOOK Speakout Intermediate 2ND EDITION by Antonia Clare and JJ Wilson (Pearson Longman, 2015) *bring this to class every day!
  • 7. Attendance policy The expectation is that you will attend all classes on time, and participate actively in English. • 2 “penalty-free” absences • 3 lates = 1 absence. ("Late" = entering the class after it has started and disturbing other students) • 20+ minutes late = 1 absence • 2+ absences,  minus 2% for each unexcused absence, up to a maximum of -10%. • Yonsei policy: you must attend 2/3 of the class. More than 8 absences = F!!! • Excused Absences: military duty, funerals, illness (not female menstrual periods). Give me official documentation within ONE week. NOTE: being absent is not an excuse for missing homework. Check online or email me if you want to know if there is homework.
  • 8. Other policies • Come prepared to class with your textbook and a positive attitude. • Arrive on time. If you are late, you will lose participation points. • You may keep your cellphone on the top of your desk for use as a dictionary, but you cannot use it for checking messages, Kakao Talk, etc. (cellphone use = 1 late) • You may have a soft drink or coffee/tea in the classroom. Please do not eat or chew gum. • Be respectful to everyone. • Have fun!
  • 9. Introductions Which way do you think is better? A or B? Why? A Anna: Hi, nice to meet you. Bob: Nice to meet you. What’s your name? Anna: My name is Anna. What’s yours? Bob. I’m Bob. B Anna: Hi, my name is Anna. Bob: Nice to meet you, Anna. I’m Bob. Anna: Nice to meet you, too, Bob. Tell the person beside you what you think: I think A / B is better because… Yes, I do too, because… Really? I don’t. I think...
  • 10. ‘B’ is better because… • it’s shorter • it’s friendlier (Anna says her name first, rather than them asking “What’s your name?”) • it sounds more natural – in English we don’t say “Nice to meet you” until after we know the other person’s name Now introduce yourself, using the name you want to use in this class. (NOT your whole Korean name.) A: Hi, my name is [I’m] _____. B: Nice to meet you, _____. I’m _____. A: Nice to meet you, too, _____.
