Working in cold weather puts strain on the body. To stay safe, workers should securely tie down supplies, wear protective headgear, take warm breaks, sweep water inside buildings, clean work surfaces of ice and snow, work with a partner, drink warm sweet beverages and eat warm high-calorie foods. Frostbite occurs from prolonged exposure to cold or wet conditions and causes burning, numbness, discoloration, pain and blistering of skin that can lead to gangrene or amputation if untreated. To prevent frostbite, wear loose layers and cover exposed skin, and seek warmth at the first sign of pain or cold wet skin.
