The Cold War began between the communist Soviet Union and the capitalist Western world led by the United States after World War 2. Stalin wanted to dominate Europe while Truman wanted peace and prosperity. When Stalin refused to withdraw Soviet troops from Eastern Europe, establishing an Iron Curtain, Truman responded with the Truman Doctrine to aid nations threatened by communism and the policy of containment to stop the spread of communism. One result was the Berlin Blockade, where Stalin cut off access to West Berlin to try to force the Western powers out.
