The Cold War began after WWII as Truman wanted peace and democracy for Western Europe while Stalin wanted to spread communism. This led to an ideological division between Eastern Europe dominated by the Soviet Union and the democratic West. In response, Truman adopted a policy of containment to prevent further communist expansion and launched the Marshall Plan, Truman Doctrine, and Berlin Airlift to support Western Europe economically and militarily against Soviet influence.
