EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Coca-Cola Company was first established in 1886 by Dr. John
Stitch Pemberton. Today the company is the world’s leading
manufacturer in the beverage industry, operating globally in more than
200 countries with its head office located in Atlanta, USA. It produces
more than 300 beverage brands and over 1.06 billion drinks are
consumed per day around the world.
As the leading beverages company in the world, Coca Cola almost
monopolizes the entire carbonated beverages segment. Beside it, Coca
Cola also maintain their reputation as the leading company in the world
using PESTLE analysis so that Coca Cola can examine the macro
environment of Coca Cola’s operations.
Scope:
It requires reasonably a long time to acquire through knowledge about
the activities of any particular organization. It is not enough to get
proper idea about a company through internet. Because it is very
difficult to find proper data only from internet.
To make this report, we need to collect different data. Those data and
information were collected from various sources. Such as Primary and
Secondary.
6
Introduction
The Coca-Cola Company is the world’s largest beverage company and is
the leading producer and marketer of soft drinks. The Coca Cola
Company is one of the biggest manufacturers, distributer and marketers
of beverages in the world. It was formed in 1886. Coca Cola offers more
than 400 brands in approximately more than 312 countries.
Today, Coca-Cola is consumed throughout the world at the rate of more
than 600 million times per day and this figure is continuing to rise.
However Coca-Cola is not the sort of company to live in its past glories
instead it looks to the future as a challenge and constantly seeks new
markets and ways of increasing its market share in areas where it
currently has a strong presence. It is the world’s largest producer and
distributer of syrups and concentrates for soft drinks.
As we all know, the Coca is today’s one of the biggest corporation that
offers different refreshment in form of a soft-drink. But aside from their
historical success, the Coca Cola Company is still a typical business that
is affected and at the same time affecting the different type of
communities.
Coca-Cola has sold more than one billion servings every day. More than
10,450 beverages are consumed every second. The company achieved
earnings of $4,347,000,000 in 2003. It is present on all seven continents
and is recognized by 94% of the world population. Coca-Cola used
numerous technologies to achieve its rise to the top of the soft drink
industry, defining new technologies and establishing paradigms that
7
popped the status quo like a cap from a soda bottle. Through technology,
Coca Cola perfected Coke as a beverage and spread it throughout the
world. Even today, the US soft drink industry is organized on this
principle. "The Coca-Cola Company" is now the largest soft drink
company in the world. Every year 800,000,000 servings of just "Coca-
Cola" are sold in the U.S alone.
8
Organization History
Coca Cola is a multinational company who started its business on May
1886 in Atlanta as a beverage (formal drink) industry. Dr. John Sythe
Pemberton made a cough syrup which he named “coke” on 8th may
1886. Its price was 5 cent per glass and was available at the largest
pharmacy of Atlanta known by the name of Jacob’s Pharmacy. Later on
it was purchased by a well known businessman Asa Griggs Candler who
introduced it as a “carbonated soft drink” in the market and hid
marketing tactics led coke to Coca Cola and it dominated the market of
carbonated soft drinks throughout the twentieth century.
Coca-Cola Enterprises, established in 1986, is a young company by the
standards of the Coca Cola system. Yet each of its franchises has a
strong heritage in the traditions of Coca-Cola that is the foundation for
this Company.
The Coca-Cola Company traces it’s beginning to 1886, when an Atlanta
pharmacist, Dr. John Pemberton, began to produce Coca-Cola syrup for
sale in fountain drinks. However the bottling business began in 1899
when two Chattanooga businessmen, Benjamin F. Thomas and Joseph
B. Whitehead, secured the exclusive rights to bottle and sell Coca-Cola
for most of the United States from The Coca-Cola Company.
The Coca-Cola bottling system continued to operate as independent,
local businesses until the early 1980s when bottling franchises began to
consolidate. In 1986, The Coca-Cola Company merged some of its
company-owned operations with two large ownership groups that were
for sale, the John Lupton franchises and BCI Holding Corporation's
bottling holdings, to form Coca Cola Enterprises Inc. The Company
offered its stock to the public on November 21, 1986, at a split-adjusted
9
price of $5.50 a share. On an annual basis, total unit case sales were
880,000 in 1986.
In December 1991, a merger between Coca-Cola Enterprises and the
Johnston Coca-Cola Bottling Group, Inc. (Johnston) created a larger,
stronger Company, again helping accelerate bottler consolidation. As
part of the merger, the senior management team of Johnston assumed
responsibility for managing the Company, and began a dramatic,
successful restructuring in 1992.Unit case sales had climbed to 1.4
billion, and total revenues were $5 billion.
In 1895 the company started to sell their product coke in bottles
which was a strategy of the company to be recognized well in
the International market. Their strategy worked and the bottled
form of coke was successfully recognized all over the world in
the beginning of 1896. Now a day’s Coca Cola is the most
famous and highly consumed brand in all over the world.

SWOT Analysis:
Before going to SWOT analysis, first we’ve know what SWOT
actually is. The alphabets in the word SWOT sands for Strength,
Weakness, Opportunity and Threats. In SWOT analysis, we
basically to discuss about the strength, weakness, opportunity
and threats of Coca-Cola Company. So, here goes the SWOT
analysis of Coca Cola Company.
Strengths:
13
i. The best global brand in the world in terms of value.
According to Interbrand, The Coca Cola Company is the
most valued ($77,839 billion) brand in the world.
ii. World’s largest market share in beverage. Coca Cola
holds the largest beverage market share in the world
(about 40%).
iii. Strong marketing and advertising. Coca Cola‟
advertising expenses accounted for more than $3 billion
in 2012 and increased firm’s sales and brand recognition.
iv. Most extensive beverage distribution channel. Coca
Cola serves more than 200 countries and more than 1.7
billion servings a day.
v. Customer loyalty. The firm enjoys having one of the
most loyal consumer groups.
vi. Bargaining power over suppliers. The Coca Cola
Company is the largest beverage producer in the world
and exerts significant power over its suppliers to receive
the lowest price available from them.
vii. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Coca Cola is
increasingly focusing on CSR programs, such as
recycling/packaging, energy conservation/climate
change, active healthy living, water stewardship and
many others, which boosts company’s social image and
result in competitive advantage over competitors.
Weaknesses:
14
i. Significant focus on carbonated drinks. The business
is still focusing on selling Coke, Fanta, Sprite and other
carbonated drinks. This strategy works in short term as
consumption of carbonated drinks will grow in emerging
economies but it will prove weak as the world is fighting
obesity and is moving towards consuming healthier food
and drinks.
ii. Undiversified product portfolio. Unlike most
company’s competitors, Coca Cola is still focusing only
on selling beverage, which puts the firm at disadvantage.
The overall consumption of soft drinks is stagnating and
Coca Cola Company will find it hard to penetrate to
other markets (selling food or snacks) when it will have
to sustain current level of growth.
iii. High debt level due to acquisitions. Nearly $8 billion
of debt acquired from CCE‟s acquisition significantly
increased Coca Cola's debt level, interest rates and
borrowing costs.
iv. Negative publicity. The firm is often criticized for high
water consumption in water scarce regions and using
harmful ingredients to produce its drinks.
v. Brand failures or many brands with insignificant
amount of revenues. Coca Cola currently sells more
than 500 brands but only few of the brands result in more
than $1 billion sales. Plus, the firm’s success of
introducing new drinks is weak. Many of its introduction
result in failures, for example, C2 drink.
15
Opportunities:
i. Bottled water consumption growth. Consumption of
bottled water is expected to grow both in US and the rest
of the world.
ii. Increasing demand for healthy food and beverages.
Due to many programs to fight obesity, demand for
healthy food and beverages has increased drastically.
The Coca Cola Company has an opportunity to further
expand its product range with drinks that have low
amount of sugar and calories.
iii. Growing beverages consumption in emerging
markets. Consumption of soft drinks is still significantly
growing in emerging markets, especially BRIC
countries, where Coca Cola could increase and maintain
its beverages market share.
iv. Growth through acquisitions. Coca Cola will find it
hard to keep current growth levels and will find it hard to
penetrate new markets with its existing product portfolio.
All this can be done more easily through acquiring other
companies.
Threats:
i. Changes in consumer tastes. Consumers around the
world become more health conscious and reduce their
consumption of carbonated drinks, drinks that have large
16
amounts of sugar, calories and fat. This is the most
serious threat as Coca Cola is mainly serving carbonated
drinks.
ii. Water scarcity. Water is becoming scarcer around the
world and increases both in cost and criticism for Coca
Cola over the large amounts of water used in production.
iii. Strong dollar. More than 60% of The Coca Cola
Company income is from outside US. Due to strong
dollar performance against other currencies firm’s
overall income may fall.
iv. Legal requirements to disclose negative information on
product labels. Some Coca Cola’s carbonated drinks
have adverse health consequences. For this reason, many
governments consider to pass legislation that requires
disclosing such information on product labels.
v. Decreasing gross profit and net profit margins. Coca
Cola’s gross profit and net profit margin was decreasing
over the past few years and may continue to decrease due
to higher water and other raw material costs.
vi. Competition from PepsiCo. PepsiCo is fiercely
competing with Coca Cola over market share in BRIC
countries, especially India.
vii. Saturated carbonated drinks market. The business
significantly relies on the carbonated drinks sales, which
is a threat for the Coca Cola as the market of carbonated
drinks is not growing or even declining in the world.
17
Organizational Design
Before the nineties the Coca Cola company was having
the centralize system of control in it, but after sometime
they realized that if they had to meet the demands of the
customers they should adopt the decentralized system in
which the authority of decision making is distributed
between different managers so that the every sector can
be managed effectively. This system was implemented in
the nineties by the company’s board of directors. Now the
organization is having two groups who are responsible for
operating:
 Bottling Investments
 Corporate
Operating groups are also divided by different regions i.e.
Africa, Asia, Middle East, European Union, Latin
America, North America etc. All the divisions are further
divided into geographical regions. This allows the local
market to involve in decision making, due to this the
organization responds quick to the changing demands of
the market, this helps the upper level managers to
concentrate on the long term planning of the organization.
18
The company’s corporate division is filled with different
departments which are as follow:
 Finance Department
 Human Resource Department
 Marketing Department
 Innovation Department
 Planning Department
Some of the above mentioned departments are in the lower
levels in the regions of the company, the decision making
job is most of the times done by the top level management.
Sharing the latest information with each other is very fast
by all the departments and by such activities the
organization appears to be doing their job effectively by
balancing standardization and mutual adjustment. The
organization has made the
CODE OF CONDUUCT which is a guidebook for the
employees that how should they act? The disciplinary
actions are the main subjects of the code of conduct.
The larger role in the organization’s success in played by
the mutual adjustments due to the changes brought upon
19
by Nevile Isdell the CEO and Chairman of the company
2004. The turnover has been reduced because the
employees feel more engaged in the work. The
organization’s growth rates increased and the return of
equity for stockholders went from a negative return to a
20 percent return. The changes brought by Isdell proved
to be good for the organization and the employees were
also happy with the change which is reflected by the end
results of the company.
Roll NO 06
Such balances are indispensible because due to them the
employees feel some flexibility and it also gives some
time to the organization to forecast their future plans
about the organization. The structure of the Coca Cola
Company is made up of both “Mechanistic & Organic”
models. The Coca Cola Beverage Company mainly
focuses on the responsiveness.
All the complex integrating mechanism which are
discussed before are the characteristics of the organic
structure. The company uses survey and interviews for
the flow of information from bottom to up, latterly the
information is exchanged by the intranet. The surveys
20
have made the Coca Cola Company to believe of
simplification and standardization. Centralization and
standardization are associated with mechanistic structure.
The mix of the two structures looks to be ideal for the
organization. When organization wants to appeal to such
a huge kind of independent market it requires to be
flexible, on the other hand to be more efficient in
production. Coordination is easy for the company when it
uses complex integrating mechanisms. Due to
centralization the organization goals and organizational
choices are kept align. Now that the information in the
company is flowing very easily, the top level of
management will receive the information more fast due to
the organization’s flexibility and responsiveness.
Recently there was a shift in the organization to make it
more decentralized and organic which corresponded with
quite uncertainty with organization.
21

are the world’s leading bottlingand canning companies.
This franchise business is strictly controlledby The Coca-
Cola Company.
Soft drinks manufacture is a competitive business.
Manufacturing techniques are continually improved. This helps
meet the highest quality standards for its products using the most
cost effective production techniques. For example, very small
changes in the shape of the can could save a canning factory
millions of dollars in production costs.
The production of Coca-Cola involves two major operations:
 creating the packaging material
 Bottling and canning the finished drink.
32
Marketing strategy
Having a marketing strategy uniquely designed for the company
has given it a huge boost at increasing global brand recognition.
Like other companies, Coca-Cola bases its marketing
strategy on the well-known marketing mix of the “4Ps”:

leading soft drink maker and operates in more than 200
countries around the world. It sells a variety of sparkling and

In May 2011, to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Coca-

transformed the building into a huge cup of ice which then
was "filled" with Coke.[2]

As the leading beverages company in the world, Coca Cola almost monopolizes the entire carbonated beverages segment. Beside it, Coca Cola also maintain their reputation as the leading company in the world using PESTLE analysis so that Coca Cola can examine the macro environment of Coca Cola’s operations. Scope: It requires reasonably a long time to acquire through knowledge about the activities of any particular organization. It is not enough to get proper idea about a company through internet. Because it is very difficult to find proper data only from internet. To make this report, we need to collect different data. Those data and information were collected from various sources. Such as Primary and Secondary.
  • 6. 6 Introduction The Coca-Cola Company is the world’s largest beverage company and is the leading producer and marketer of soft drinks. The Coca Cola Company is one of the biggest manufacturers, distributer and marketers of beverages in the world. It was formed in 1886. Coca Cola offers more than 400 brands in approximately more than 312 countries. Today, Coca-Cola is consumed throughout the world at the rate of more than 600 million times per day and this figure is continuing to rise. However Coca-Cola is not the sort of company to live in its past glories instead it looks to the future as a challenge and constantly seeks new markets and ways of increasing its market share in areas where it currently has a strong presence. It is the world’s largest producer and distributer of syrups and concentrates for soft drinks. As we all know, the Coca is today’s one of the biggest corporation that offers different refreshment in form of a soft-drink. • 7. 7 popped the status quo like a cap from a soda bottle. Through technology, Coca Cola perfected Coke as a beverage and spread it throughout the world. Even today, the US soft drink industry is organized on this principle. "The Coca-Cola Company" is now the largest soft drink company in the world. Every year 800,000,000 servings of just "Coca- Cola" are sold in the U.S alone.
  • 8. 8 Organization History Coca Cola is a multinational company who started its business on May 1886 in Atlanta as a beverage (formal drink) industry. Dr. John Sythe Pemberton made a cough syrup which he named “coke” on 8th may 1886. Its price was 5 cent per glass and was available at the largest pharmacy of Atlanta known by the name of Jacob’s Pharmacy. Later on it was purchased by a well known businessman Asa Griggs Candler who introduced it as a “carbonated soft drink” in the market and hid marketing tactics led coke to Coca Cola and it dominated the market of carbonated soft drinks throughout the twentieth century. Coca-Cola Enterprises, established in 1986, is a young company by the standards of the Coca Cola system. Yet each of its franchises has a strong heritage in the traditions of Coca-Cola that is the foundation for this Company. The Coca-Cola Company traces it’s beginning to 1886, when an Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John Pemberton, began to produce Coca-Cola syrup for sale in fountain drinks. However the bottling business began in 1899 when two Chattanooga businessmen, Benjamin F. Thomas and Joseph B. Whitehead, secured the exclusive rights to bottle and sell Coca-Cola for most of the United States from The Coca-Cola Company. The Coca-Cola bottling system continued to operate as independent, local businesses until the early 1980s when bottling franchises began to consolidate. In 1986, The Coca-Cola Company merged some of its company-owned operations with two large ownership groups that were for sale, the John Lupton franchises and BCI Holding Corporation's bottling holdings, to form Coca Cola Enterprises Inc. The Company offered its stock to the public on November 21, 1986, at a split-adjusted
  • 9. 9 price of $5.50 a share. On an annual basis, total unit case sales were 880,000 in 1986. In December 1991, a merger between Coca-Cola Enterprises and the Johnston Coca-Cola Bottling Group, Inc. (Johnston) created a larger, stronger Company, again helping accelerate bottler consolidation. As part of the merger, the senior management team of Johnston assumed responsibility for managing the Company, and began a dramatic, successful restructuring in 1992.Unit case sales had climbed to 1.4 billion, and total revenues were $5 billion. In 1895 the company started to sell their product coke in bottles which was a strategy of the company to be recognized well in the International market. Their strategy worked and the bottled form of coke was successfully recognized all over the world in the beginning of 1896. Now a day’s Coca Cola is the most famous and highly consumed brand in all over the world.

Coca Cola is increasingly focusing on CSR programs, such as recycling/packaging, energy conservation/climate change, active healthy living, water stewardship and many others, which boosts company’s social image and result in competitive advantage over competitors. Weaknesses:
  • 14. 14 i. Significant focus on carbonated drinks. The business is still focusing on selling Coke, Fanta, Sprite and other carbonated drinks. This strategy works in short term as consumption of carbonated drinks will grow in emerging economies but it will prove weak as the world is fighting obesity and is moving towards consuming healthier food and drinks. ii. Undiversified product portfolio. Unlike most company’s competitors, Coca Cola is still focusing only on selling beverage, which puts the firm at disadvantage. The overall consumption of soft drinks is stagnating and Coca Cola Company will find it hard to penetrate to other markets (selling food or snacks) when it will have to sustain current level of growth. iii. High debt level due to acquisitions. Nearly $8 billion of debt acquired from CCE‟s acquisition significantly increased Coca Cola's debt level, interest rates and borrowing costs. iv. Negative publicity. The firm is often criticized for high water consumption in water scarce regions and using harmful ingredients to produce its drinks. v. Brand failures or many brands with insignificant amount of revenues. Coca Cola currently sells more than 500 brands but only few of the brands result in more than $1 billion sales. Plus, the firm’s success of introducing new drinks is weak. Many of its introduction result in failures, for example, C2 drink.
  • 15. 15 Opportunities: i. Bottled water consumption growth. Consumption of bottled water is expected to grow both in US and the rest of the world. ii. Increasing demand for healthy food and beverages. Due to many programs to fight obesity, demand for healthy food and beverages has increased drastically. The Coca Cola Company has an opportunity to further expand its product range with drinks that have low amount of sugar and calories. iii. Growing beverages consumption in emerging markets. Consumption of soft drinks is still significantly growing in emerging markets, especially BRIC countries, where Coca Cola could increase and maintain its beverages market share. iv. Growth through acquisitions. Coca Cola will find it hard to keep current growth levels and will find it hard to penetrate new markets with its existing product portfolio. All this can be done more easily through acquiring other companies. Threats: i. Changes in consumer tastes. Consumers around the world become more health conscious and reduce their consumption of carbonated drinks, drinks that have large
  • 16. 16 amounts of sugar, calories and fat. This is the most serious threat as Coca Cola is mainly serving carbonated drinks. ii. Water scarcity. Water is becoming scarcer around the world and increases both in cost and criticism for Coca Cola over the large amounts of water used in production. iii. Strong dollar. More than 60% of The Coca Cola Company income is from outside US. Due to strong dollar performance against other currencies firm’s overall income may fall. iv. Legal requirements to disclose negative information on product labels. Some Coca Cola’s carbonated drinks have adverse health consequences. For this reason, many governments consider to pass legislation that requires disclosing such information on product labels. v. Decreasing gross profit and net profit margins. Coca Cola’s gross profit and net profit margin was decreasing over the past few years and may continue to decrease due to higher water and other raw material costs. vi. Competition from PepsiCo. PepsiCo is fiercely competing with Coca Cola over market share in BRIC countries, especially India. vii. Saturated carbonated drinks market. The business significantly relies on the carbonated drinks sales, which is a threat for the Coca Cola as the market of carbonated drinks is not growing or even declining in the world.
  • 17. 17 Organizational Design Before the nineties the Coca Cola company was having the centralize system of control in it, but after sometime they realized that if they had to meet the demands of the customers they should adopt the decentralized system in which the authority of decision making is distributed between different managers so that the every sector can be managed effectively. This allows the local market to involve in decision making, due to this the organization responds quick to the changing demands of the market, this helps the upper level managers to concentrate on the long term planning of the organization.
  • 18. 18 The company’s corporate division is filled with different departments which are as follow:  Finance Department  Human Resource Department  Marketing Department  Innovation Department  Planning Department Some of the above mentioned departments are in the lower levels in the regions of the company, the decision making job is most of the times done by the top level management. The structure of the Coca Cola Company is made up of both “Mechanistic & Organic” models. The Coca Cola Beverage Company mainly focuses on the responsiveness. • 20. 20 have made the Coca Cola Company to believe of simplification and standardization. Centralization and standardization are associated with mechanistic structure. The mix of the two structures looks to be ideal for the organization. When organization wants to appeal to such a huge kind of independent market it requires to be flexible, on the other hand to be more efficient in production. Coordination is easy for the company when it uses complex integrating mechanisms. Due to centralization the organization goals and organizational choices are kept align. Now that the information in the company is flowing very easily, the top level of management will receive the information more fast due to the organization’s flexibility and responsiveness. Recently there was a shift in the organization to make it more decentralized and organic which corresponded with quite uncertainty with organization.
