India produces 90% of the world's annual coir production of 350,000 metric tons. Coir fiber is extracted from coconut husks and is known as a versatile natural fiber. The two main types are white fiber from young coconuts used in mats and geo-textiles, and brown fiber from mature coconuts used in brushes, doormats and mattresses. Coir production is a major industry in India that employs over 6.4 lakh people, 80% of whom are women.
