This document discusses the history and origins of coffee. It notes that coffee beans were first exported from Ethiopia and brought to Yemen by traders. The word "coffee" derives from the Arabic word "qahwah". Coffee was introduced to Europe in the 16th century on the island of Malta through Turkish slaves who used to make the traditional coffee beverage. Coffee then became popular in Maltese high society, with many coffee shops opening.

which the Turkish prisoners earn some money, especially by preparing
coffee, a powder resembling snuff tobacco, with water and sugar." Coffee
