The Code Red worm infected over 359,000 systems globally by exploiting a buffer overflow vulnerability in Microsoft's Internet Information Services web server software. It defaced infected web servers with a message between July 20-27 and sent traffic to the White House website. System administrators had to disable the vulnerable indexing service or apply patches from Microsoft to remove the worm from infected machines.
