Influenced by the facilitators

Louise Jensen // loje@itu.dk // Digital media and design // Co-design F2011 // 05.01.11
Process of expression & interpretation

     Louise Jensen // loje@itu.dk // Digital media and design // Co-design F2011 // 05.01.11
Structure the data

• Structure data (in order to better digested)
   – Visualise
   – Categorise
• Tool for overview

        Louise Jensen // loje@itu.dk // Digital media and design // Co-design F2011 // 05.01.11
Validation of the mental model

• Personal bias
• People tend to be positive
• People
• Wish we done it earliere – it surprised me how

          Louise Jensen // loje@itu.dk // Digital media and design // Co-design F2011 // 05.01.11
The role of the designer

• Motivate og facilitate ideation
• Lead the information og make sure that we extract
  correct information
• Forefeeling the design goal
• Select key findings in large amount of complex data
• Consider all interest of the stakeholders
• Provide expert knowledge
   – Greater understandning and bigger picture
   – Technological perspective
   – Qualified to take important design decisions

                   Louise Jensen // Digital media and design // Co-design F??? // 05.01.11
Listening to users is always wise but…

• Fatal consequence of doing co-design with a
lack of time and financial ressources
• Balance between listening and ignoring
• Listening to much to users (Norman)
   – Users tend to always say yes (Constatine)
   – Users change their minds (Constatine)
• Examples where the designer know what people want
• Norman: Apple
• Arena365 thought they knew what

         Louise Jensen // loje@itu.dk // Digital media and design // Co-design F2011 // 05.01.11

Editor's Notes

  1. Jo flere fejl vi har begået jo mere har vi lært
  2. Many pitfull There are many pitfull from recruitment to analysis. We made mistakes in our design process but it is also out mistakes that we learned most from, e.g. Recruitment. We have not event come to the point where we had to Now when we know more about the user is where it becomes very intersting. Where we select key findings og dig deeper It suprised me how many constructve input og the participants revaled many aspects that we did not had though about. Having invstigating the field more and listen more to Liz Sanders, i realized that it could had been helpful to had the particpants doing creative prepareation in order to make them reflect on the topic and having the right mindset and more relevant. Both this and the material to think with as i talk about in the paper, we though deliberate choosed this because we did not wanted to affect the mindset of the participants because we thought that it would damage the data. I realize that no matter what we do as facilitators we will always effect the data from participants. Garver et all explains this very well with their model + quote him Interpret In the process of creating a meaning out of the data. As facilitators we constantly Data can never be objetive because the reseracher has its own bias and interpret things differently. It is also the participatants that create the menaning. This is not only done verbal, Designers should not focus on what they say they want, but what their actions say (what they do) I realized that the dialogue between us and users provided rich insights. All the stereotypes and prejudice gets sorted out and cleared with reality As facilitator of the different method we affect the way the users interpret the task or question. The interviewer condenses og interpretent the answers and look into these areas Diares are collected, interpret and analysed. There is a difference between analysis and interpretation Analyse in the right way Why should the designer interpret /Norman Listen to customers but not always do what they say (dont trust them blindly) Follow instinct and ignore conventional wisdom We trid ti get the users prioritize design quality describe Which are the one who actual matters? Better and more relevant ideas when prepared the mindset. Ownership when people are more involved + co-creation can also be used to promote products Own format on it Gaver: ”Relationsip between probe and proposal are complex and difficult and hard to trace. + seldom give a clear guidance to the design process” Probes demands a high level of subjectivity otherwise one is not able to understand them. Conflict between Designers as Expert Påvirker indenfor hvilket referece-ramme wanted to be invistigated

4. After we had executed all the methods incl. the workshop, we compiled a mental mode and here is where the designer takes on a more active role. As the mental model illustrates we had a large amount of data that had to be analyzed. Especially the workshop had generated various ideas. overwhelming volume of data of many kinds, all of which must be organized, digested, and understood “ (Constatine, 2004). Wish we done it earliere – it surprised me how Structure data in Mental model Structures help to focus on issuces that are important Danger of not knowing where the important data is See the whole of the reserach and exploring them further, get new ideas, combine Mental model visuelize the sorted, organized data, put labels on it, categorizing, see it from different kind of views/perspective See sammenhæng See the whole of the reserach and exploring them further, get new ideas, combine See the big picture Its a tool for you to put yourself into the mind of the user (a snapshot of the pågældende situation right now) Structure your findings Should we had made the user categorize our findings Let go of our fordomme, stereotypes Tool for how you should analyze your data Looking for pattern and see similarities Constant reminder of how it is like to be the person. Compare Do not overload with information but it should represent the group of people that one has got to known We can probably not use our mental model as we evaluated the . Validation of our mental model: Many personal bias (tailored to specific persons + we influenced) People tend to always say yes and be positive. What people say is sometimes not the same as what they feel or mean. Some of the data from the Validate with other methods that would supplement the findings Vi tog kvalicerede gæt men der er stor sandsynlighed at vi har været for subjektive + overfortolket + tillgat tingene værdi – hvilker sanders også siger)

Some of the data from the Validate with other methods that would supplement the findings Vi tog kvalicerede gæt men der er stor sandsynlighed at vi har været for subjektive + overfortolket + tillgat tingene værdi – hvilker sanders også siger) We understand the data through our own format and personal experiences Model driven exploration can speed your study Recruitment,
  6. As I argued in my report the unsaid + Trick some unconsience informationer The data can be complex and contradictory and finding key findings can be complicated. “ it can be all too easy for key information to be missed or lost. The dilemma is to figure out what to focus on and what to ignore ” (Constatine, 2004). This is the reason why we need qualified designers and researcher that are able to analyse the data properly. Sanders support this with ” Designers will be needed because they hold highly developed skills that are relevant at larger levels of scope and complexity. By selection and training, most designers are good at visual thinking, conducting creative processes, finding missing information, and being able to make necessary decisions in the absence of complete information ” (Sanders, 2008, 12). At the same time there is one more thing to consider; “ Like user feedback, user studies may offer little to help designers to distinguish user wants from user needs. ” (Constatine, 2004). So the designer and researchers role also needs validate users assumptions and ideas. The designer can provide expert knowledge that the other stakeholders do not have and is often specialized in a certain areas. “ Designers professionally keep track of existing, new and emerging technologies, and have an overview of production processes and business contexts ” (Sanders, 2008, 12). So the designer ’ s role and knowledge becomes important throughout the design development process. Besides involving users can also includes certain challenges, that the designer have to handle objectively. So the designer becomes qualified to take important design decisions and make sure that the process in forefeeling the design goal. Even though we as designer is letting go of control we are still in full control of the design process. We evaluate take the important decisions Sikre at det er den rigtige information som vi udvinder Kvalificerede Vi kommer aldrig til at lære alt om brugeren men de kan hjælpe os med at lave qualificerede Hermoneutiske proces – lag på lag
  7. First of all Arguments that building the wrong system is even more costly and time consuming usually fall on deaf ears. Consequently, user studies are often rushed or shortchanged for lack of time and resources. Do it right or do not do it at all Norman listening to the users is always wise but to a certain degree should not rely on users to tell the designers what is wrong and how to get it right Constatine: Because it depends so heavily on the comments and contribution of users, iterative prototyping is vulnerable to the peculiarities of particular users. If the same user or users are involved repeatedly, the design can end up excessively tailored to their biases. Alternatively, varying the users from round to round can lead the design to jump from variation to variation without significant improvement ” (Constatine) designer then asks whether users really need something, the answer tends to be yes—regardless of actual importance “ Users change their minds and different users will have different views and perspectives to offer” “ It takes responsible judgment to know when to listen to users and when to ignore them” (Constatine, 2004) Arena365 sagde viste hvordan brugerne er og indicated that they actual had a pretty clear picture of Finde frem til det samme
