change in the technology, cultural context, and the industry. Adding to that, the concept of
‘cinema of attractions’ will also be discussed in relation to a perceived need to address the
early cinema audience. To begin with, it needs to be stated that Hollywood cinema is the
most popular in the world and along with that it is a fact that Hollywood cinema has
significant influence on the other cinema of different countries. Moreover, it has also been
identified that the industry still dictates the fashion for movies and each year it produces
thousands of movies. From this observation, it could be stated that Hollywood has been
dominating this industry for a significant period of time. Now, it is important to understand
that with the advancement of technology and with time, the ways in which the cinema has
presented itself to the world has completely changed.
The change that has been highlighted is based on multiple factors. Such factor includes
advancement in the technology, culture of the people where the movies are being presented
and most importantly the factors that comes into play is the choices of the people. There are
several other factors which have played a significant role in the advancement of the
cinemas. In relevance to the same, one of the most important factors that will be discussed
is ‘cinema of attractions’. To begin with, it could be stated that the term cinema of attraction
as a term could be defined as “the cinemas which displays the visibility, willing to rupture a
self-enclosed fictional world for a chance to solicit the attention of the spectator.” (Berliner
2017) This concept clearly helps readers to understand that the only reason behind creating
a cinema is not only for creating a certain entertainment function for the audience, whereas
it could be seen that there could be more along the lines that the film will attract and it will
have the ability to provide something exclusive or unique.
The concept came into existence when the filmmakers of that particular era was trying to
implement different theories in order to create images of extreme potential. The cinema of
attraction, tend to force the audience of the film to dive into the world and think thoroughly
about the ideas that are being presented in the movie (Song 2018). Apart from that, as the
time went on and there were multiple advancements, it could be identified that the cinema

Based on the observation made by Eisenstein, it could be seen that theater tends to consist
of a montage of series of attractions. It could also be seen that it helps in creating a relation
to the spectator entirely different from his absorption in ‘illusory imitativeness.’ Based on
this observation, it could be easily stated that this is one of the ways in which the concept of
cinema of attraction for early cinema audiences could easily expanded. Also, this term gets
selected as “partly to underscore the relation to the spectator that this later avant-garde
practice shares with early cinema: of exhibitionist confrontation rather than diegetic

could be seen that significant number of inventive techniques gets implemented that tends
to include different factors such as parallel editing, location shooting and also at the same
time minor camera movements. For example, the movie “The Great Train Robbery” being
one of the greatest example of cinema of attraction, it could be seen that the implementation
of several techniques could be seen. Now, it could be stated that On-demand, streaming
services, and TV have allowed viewers to watch their favorite movies whenever, and
wherever, they want. Adding to that the fact that also needs to be stated is that like in other
industries, technology has completely changed the film industry – from the ways movies get
made, to how they are edited, to the ways audiences watch them. With time, the preferences
of the individuals have also changed and this has also at the same time played a significant
role in the cultural context of the cinemas.
There were different other aspects that first got introduced in this particular concept of
cinema of attraction and therefore it is the matter of making scene (Fairservice 2019).
Through this the cinemas saw a completely new dimension as a form of new art (Stokes and
Maltby eds. 2019). This has also helped the readers to understand that the possible changes
got introduced is that emphasizing the fact that imitating the different movement of nature
is not necessarily the best way of defining the essence of cinema. Therefore, it could be seen
that the early cinemas are often could be referred as the progression to the narrative
form. As mentioned by Gunning, based on the early stages of film production it was
specifically identified that the audiences tend to demonstrate a significant fascination for
that of the moving pictures which are in the present day known as the “cinema of
attractions”. The fact that will help to get a better understanding of the concept that enables
the development in relevance to that of the early audience is that the particular period

cameras tend to have the specific capacity and it could be seen that they are not just to
record reality. However, the fact that needs to be stated is that the main idea behind the
same is that they tend to reveal an unseen world to the audience. As they are able to see the
entire idea about the same, it is important to understand that multiple aspects get
highlighted to the world through the cinemas (Pérez-González 2019). Therefore, it could be
realized that with time there has been significant changes in the movie making and also at
the same time the ways in which they get portrayed to the world.
On a concluding note, it could be said that just like every aspect of evolution there are
multiple changes which have taken place in the cinema industry and the implementation of
the changes has been seem through the history of cinema making.
