Cloud Computing represents a radical change in the way we organize and use computing resources and storage. The scientific and academic communities face the challenge of not only adapting their procedures to this new paradigm, but also contributing Cloud Computing development and leading its evolution towards open, secure and interoperable computing infrastructures, which will playing a key role in the community clouds paradigm.
The Spanish MEGHA initiative promotes and coordinates contributions to cloud computing R&D, education and management made by institutions affiliated with RedIRIS [7] in Spain. In the first phase (2010–2012), MEGHA validated federated cloud platforms using Opennebula and OCCI [10] to streamline the use of cloud technologies among R&E service centers. Representative infrastructure providers (CESCA, CESGA, PIC), middleware providers (OpenNebula, RedIRIS, OSAmI-Commons) and users (UAB, UOC, UM) together with intermediate/identity/brokers resources (RedIRIS) joined efforts to demonstrate the viability of this approach.
The results stimulated the development of use cases including e-learning platforms on demand (Learning Apps project), a distributed HPC platform (e-Science), and Virtual Labs (VDI) in a hybrid scenario (Academic services).
Next Steps?
As next goal, the Spanish research and academic community is working to assess the possibilities of creating a productive Infrastructure Cloud Computing service within member institutions. With this new approach new challenges appear:
Federated user authentication and authorization mechanisms.
Brokering architecture scenario.
Secure VM image distribution and validation.
A federated cloud accounting system integrating the accounting records of multiple cloud managers and supporting federated cloud governance.
Monitoring and notification of unpredictable changes in availability and readability status.
Security Policies and Service Level Agreements (SLA’s).

Multimedia document processing using the Weblab platform: AXES project use ca...OW2
AXES (http://axes-project.eu) was a project co-funded by the European Union’s Seventh Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration. The goal of AXES was to develop tools that provide various types of users with new engaging ways to interact with audiovisual libraries, helping them to discover, browse, search and enrich video archives.
The OW2 WebLab (http://weblab-project.org) integration platform for multimedia processing has been used to aggregate the services developed by 9 partners in order to build the three demonstrators targeting various user groups: the media professionals, the journalists and researchers as well as the home users.
As a result of the AXES project, OW2 "Open AXES", is born. It provides a complete solution that gathers innovative audiovisual content analysis technologies (shot and keyframes detection, image classification, speech transcription, large scale indexing, similarity search, etc.) as well as an ergonomic interface to retrieve and navigate in video archives.

Containers Anywhere with OpenShift by Red Hat - Session Sponsored by Red HatAmazon Web Services
OpenShift is Red Hat's Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) that lets developers quickly develop, host, and scale Docker container-based applications. OpenShift enables a uniform and standardised approach to container management across all hosting options including AWS/EC2 and other private/public cloud and on/off-premise variants.
At this session, you will learn how Red Hat's enterprise clients are using OpenShift to enable their digital transformation initiatives. Examples will cover how realising a hybrid cloud strategy can simplify and reduce the risk of migrating and transitioning application workloads to containers in the cloud.

The eternal struggle of application development is choosing to pay down technical debt or adding new features. Why not both! This meetup will explore modernization strategies enabled by open-source project KubeVirt that will help you do just that.
Legacy applications are usually monolithic and run on one or more virtual machines. Some applications are easier to modernize if they have well established counterparts in the containerized world (EAP, Spring Boot, etc). Large classic .Net applications running on IIS in Windows server are a lot harder to modernize in one shot. KubeVirt allows you to import your existing VM workloads into Kubernetes and modernize your application in stages.
With KubeVirt, Virtual Machines are first-class citizens in Kubernetes and have access to all the artifacts that pods do, including being able to access and be accessed using service endpoints. Once you have the VM running in your Kubernetes project, you can start to modernize and extend the functionality of your application.
We will import a .Net application running on IIS on a Windows Server VM into KubeVirt. Then we will go through the stages of containerizing each of the logical layers of the application. Note that this strategy can be used with other OS and Middleware combinations.

There are 6Rs that can help you have Cloud-native workloads running in your Kubernetes deployments: Refactor, Replatform, Rehost, Retire, Retain or Repurchase.
Rehosting virtual machines provides less friction than others, while still providing some advantages.
One of those advantages being that you can have workloads you don't want to or cannot containerize yet sit alongside your containers through KubeVirt.
In this meetup, we'll show you how Forklift 2.0 makes it easy to move them to their new home. And explain why this is a small step for your workloads but a giant leap on your path to the cloud.

Cloud Native Applications take advantage of components and architectures that have predictable properties for scaling and recovery. A Cloud Native Application Framework streamlines the scaffolding to provide these components. Using Spring Boot and Spring Cloud, developers can quickly and easily develop RESTful microservices taking advantage of patterns like client side load balancing, dynamic runtime configuration, service discovery and circuit breakers, many of which are provided by Netflix OSS. Cloud Native Application Frameworks allow developers to focus on their domain and conveniently take advantage of production hardened components to build scalable resilient applications.

Today, the model of hybrid cloud comes under the eyes of a lot of organizations. The idea of combining resources of public cloud providers with private depending on the terms of execution, the need of more resources, an extra protection of the data, more or less security in services with sensitive information, etc. are some of the capabilities that this model has to answer. The case of CSUC, acting as cloud provider and at the same time as user of external IaaS and PaaS services, is analyzed sharing its first experiences in the way to archive a real multicloud architecture to provide services for catalan universities and research institutions.

Live Introduction to the Cloud Native Microservices Platform – open, manageab...Lucas Jellema
The microservices architecture promises flexibility, scalability and optimal use of compute resources. Through independent components with well-defined scope and responsibility, interface and ownership that are evolved and managed in an automated DevOps process, this architecture leverages current technologies and lessons learned. The Oracle Microservices Platform is an open source runtime for deploying, running and managing container based microservices. This platform offers a distributed container runtime based on Kubernetes and on top of that API management, a build in event bus, a service broker to link in external services, advanced inter microservice traffic control and load balancing and extensive monitoring. It supports the pure pay-per-use and scale-on-request serverless paradigm. The platform can run anywhere: your laptop our data center, a third party cloud or as an Oracle managed cloud service. This session introduces this Microservices Platform and demonstrates how it is used to roll out and manage a set of collaborative microservices, both locally and in the cloud.
Kubernetes has become the defacto standard platform for managing containerized microservices. However, with just Kubernetes this platform is not yet complete. We also need facilities for managing traffic between microservices - monitor, route, authorize - as well as handle events. We need to support the Serverless architecture style - with triggered functions instead of pre-allocated servers. And we need a governance strategy around new versions of functions and microservices.
Oracle will launch an open (source) microservices platform with all these capabilities preintegrated. This platform is based on Kubernetes and also leverages Kafka, Project Fn, OpenServiceBroker and Istio along with monitoring using Prometheus, Grafana and Kibana. The platform can be run locally or on any IaaS platform. Oracle hopes to make money from a managed cloud service for this platform.
In this session, I want to explore the need for a microservices platform and the essential components it should provide. I will then demonstrate this open microservices platform proposed by Oracle.

CloudStack might be best known for it's deployments within the service provider industry, but the adoption of CloudStack for private and community clouds has led to some fascinating user stories. We don't hear as much about CloudStack's use within private clouds, perhaps because the platform is so foundational yet easy to implement. But don't be fooled, organizations around the globe are relying on CloudStack to be the core of their agile infrastructure strategy. Come pull back the curtain…

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
