2. Closures of packaging
1. Closures are devices and techniques used to close
or seal container such as a bottle, jug, jar , tube,
can etc.
2. Closer can be a Cap, cover, lid, plug, etc.
3. A closure is the part of the package which prevent
the contents from escaping and allow no
substance to enter the container.
3. Purpose of closure
Keep the container closed and the
contents contained for the specified shelf
life until time of opening.
Provide a barrier to dirt, oxygen,
moisture, etc. Control of premeation is
critical to many types of products: foods,
chemicals, etc.
Keep the product secure from undesired
premature opening.
Provide a means of reclosing or reusing
the container
Assist in dispensing and use of product.
Allow reasonable ease to open the
container by the intended user.
5. Closures are available in five basic
designs:
1. threaded Screw on
2. lug on
3. Crimp on(crowns)
4. Press on(snap)
5. Roll on
6. Friction
6. Threaded screw cap
1. When a screw cap is applied, its threads engaged with the
corresponding threads molded on the neck of the bottle.
2. A liner in the cap, pressed against the opening of the container,
seals the product in the container.
3. The screw cap is commonly made of metal or plastics.
4. The metal is usually tin plate or aluminum and in plastic is
thermoplastic and thermosetting material.
7. Lug cap
1. The lug cap is similar to the threaded screw cap and
operates on the same principle.
2. It is simply an interrupted thread on the glass finish,
instead of a continuous thread.
3. The lug cap is used for both normal atmosphere
pressure and vacuum pressure closing
8. Crown caps
1. This style cap is commonly used as a crimped
closure for beverage bottles.
2. Beverage bottles are frequently closed with crown
beverage cap.
3. These are shallow metal cap that is crimped into
locking position around the head of the bottle.
9. Roll-on closures
1. The aluminum roll on cap can be seal securely,
opened easily and resealed effectively.
2. Re-sealable, non resalable and pilfer proof types
of roll on closures are available for use on glass or
plastic bottles.
10. Heat Seal Bottle Closure
1. Heat seal liners are liners that are inserted into a
compatible cap by the cap manufacturer. Unlike
pressure-sensitive liners and other types of liners,
they have extended use beyond the opening of the
packaging.
11. Heat seal liner
components
Heat seal liners can be one-piece or two-piece,
depending on the type of product and how the product
is intended to be used.
A one-piece liner consists of a foam-backed or paper-
backed foil laminate.
With a two-piece liner, there are two additional layers
consisting of wax and pulp board.
14. Disc Cut Heat Seal Liners: Disc cut or
round cut liners are the same sizes as the
container (no tabs to grab).
15. Tri-Tab Heat Seal Liners: Tri-tab
liners have three tabs cut into
them for the consumer to grab to
remove the liner.
Lift 'n Peel Heat Seal
Liners: Lift 'n peel liners have a
half-moon on top to easily
remove the liner (this is a one-
piece liner).
16. Top Tab Heat Seal Liners: Top tab liners look
very similar to lift 'n peel liners, but it is a two-
piece liner.
