Bamboo is a promising source of biomass energy that is often overlooked. It grows rapidly, is renewable, and can be used to produce charcoal, briquettes, and electricity through gasification. Models show that managed bamboo forests can sequester carbon faster than other fast-growing species. Technologies exist for small-scale and commercial charcoal production from bamboo, as well as briquetting enterprises. Life cycle analyses indicate bamboo gasification systems have higher energy output and carbon closure than ethanol production. While initial costs are higher for biomass systems than diesel or solar, the production costs of electricity are lower, making biomass more economical. Burn Design Lab aims to improve lives and the environment in developing countries through improved cookstove and fuel design. Their mission is motivated by the large health and environmental impacts of traditional cooking practices. They take a holistic, user-centered approach to design through research, prototyping, and field testing. Recent projects include the Kuniokoa stove designed for East Africa which saves 50% on fuel use, and partnerships to develop institutional, plancha, gravity, and humanitarian stove designs. Revenue comes from grants, contracts, and donors to support their work developing outstanding affordable cooking solutions.

Dr. Andama Edward presented on a project promoting tree planting, beekeeping, and fuel efficient stove use around West Bugwe Forest in Busia, Uganda. Baseline findings found high forest dependence for livelihoods and fuel. However, communities were willing to adopt new skills for conservation and alternative incomes like apiaries. The project has potential to transform communities through improved incomes while promoting biodiversity conservation.

This is a workshop about communication and collaboration. We will experience how we can analyze the reasons for resistance to change (exercise 1) and practice how to improve our conversation style and be more in control and effective in the way we communicate (exercise 2).
This session will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
Abstract:
Let’s talk about powerful conversations! We all know how to lead a constructive conversation, right? Then why is it so difficult to have those conversations with people at work, especially those in powerful positions that show resistance to change?
Learning to control and direct conversations takes understanding and practice.
We can combine our innate empathy with our analytical skills to gain a deeper understanding of complex situations at work. Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
In the session you will experience how preparing and reflecting on your conversation can help you be more influential at work. You will learn how to communicate more effectively with the people needed to achieve positive change. You will leave with a self-revised version of a difficult conversation and a practical model to use when you get back to work.
