The study prospectively validated the NEXUS II decision rule for predicting intracranial injury in children with blunt head trauma. It found:
1) The NEXUS II rule had high sensitivity (98.9%) and low specificity (9.8%) for detecting intracranial injuries, similar to previous studies.
2) Applying the NEXUS II criteria would significantly increase the CT scan rate from the current 10.4% to over 50% due to a large number of low-risk children meeting criteria.
3) The NEXUS II rule requires further validation in minor head trauma patients to determine its ability to safely reduce unnecessary CT scans in this population.

This annual progress report summarizes an ongoing 8-year study analyzing clinical and radiological predictors of surgical difficulty in interlaminar endoscopic spine surgery. The study has enrolled 88 patients and conducted evaluations to identify suitable candidates for the procedure. Preliminary results show significant reductions in pain and disability scores post-surgery. Upcoming work includes follow-up assessments and data analysis to identify predictors of surgical outcomes and complications to inform patient selection and improve quality of life. The study is progressing well and has presented initial findings at a recent neurosurgery conference. No additional budget or staff is required to complete the remaining work.

Titanium cranioplasty may be superior to autologous bone cranioplasty based on a randomized controlled trial comparing the two procedures. The trial found that titanium cranioplasty resulted in fewer implant failures requiring reoperation compared to autologous bone cranioplasty, though the difference was not statistically significant. Titanium cranioplasty also led to better reported functional and cosmetic outcomes with no difference in healthcare costs between the two groups over one year of follow up. However, the trial was prone to bias because the surgeon was not blinded to the treatment group assignment. Larger, multi-center studies are needed to verify the results.

Multimodal i-vectors to Detect and Evaluate Parkinson’s Disease
This document summarizes a study that used multimodal i-vectors to detect and evaluate Parkinson's disease.
