Examples of artificial intelligence in healthcare include IBM Watson which provides evidence-based treatment options to oncologists, Medical Sieve which assists with clinical decision making in radiology and cardiology, and an app from AiCure supported by NIH that uses a smartphone's camera to confirm patients are adhering to their prescriptions. Deep Genomics also aims to identify patterns in genetic data to inform doctors about the effects of genetic variations at a cellular level. Overall, big data and AI can help make the right healthcare decisions for patients.

A Mobile Phone Based Homecare Data Transmission and Management System
In this study, we combined Hospital Information System (HIS) and the basis of mobile communication, established a telemedicine homecare management system in long-term and sustainable health monitoring through the transmission of Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). Based on the RS-232C standard, we connected Short Message Service (SMS) with sphygmomanometer and glucose meter for sending real-time physiological responses to telemedicine homecare information management system through GSM900/1800 2G mobile phone in Taiwan. There are 300 participants and 4736 records of blood pressure and sugar measurement data in the system, which also connected with several hospitals’ HIS. Physicians may link to the system through the health record page in HIS for patients’ physiological responses and records. If there are any abnormal data, physicians and medical staff can inform and arrange patients back to the clinic for further treatment or observation.

safety of the care provided to patients. The Institute of Medicine (IOM 2001), a presti-
gious branch of the National Institutes of Health, stated in its landmark report Crossing the
Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century, “In its current form, habits, and

Another historic IOM (2000) report, To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health
System, indicated that a shocking number of people—an estimated 44,000 to 98,000 per
year—are harmed by the healthcare system. A more recent study found that this number
has increased since publication of the 2000 IOM report despite substantial efforts to
improve. Medical errors have now become the third leading cause of death in the United
States (Makary and Daniel 2016).
The complexity of medical service and the inconsistency with which these services
are delivered, not to mention the fragmented nature of the system, have led to a number
of quality concerns (Mosadeghrad 2014), including a lack of systematic approaches to care
delivery and quality improvement. Efforts to improve quality in the medical profession
have a long tradition of focusing on individual performance versus system performance.
Exhibit 10.1 illustrates the potential flaw in this thinking. The bell-shaped curve, P-1,
represents the overall performance of any given system. Curve P-2 illustrates an improved
system of performance where the median performance is moved from M-1 to M-2. If an

Non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer account for over half of all deaths in India and pose a major threat to economic growth. Healthcare IT and technology can help address this challenge by improving access to care through telemedicine, improving treatment effectiveness via clinical protocols and integrated health information systems, and improving patient adherence using remote monitoring and disease management programs.
Opportunities for computing in cancer research
- Data generation is no longer the bottleneck in oncology research - data management, analysis, and reasoning present greater challenges due to the pace of data and technology growth.
- Computing and data science are enabling researchers to move beyond simple observations to predictive modeling and interventions based on understanding complex patient trajectories over time using diverse real-world data sources.
- Machine learning and data analytics applied at scale can support tasks like tumor board decision making, identifying high-risk patients, and understanding disease at multiple levels, but require significant computing power.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune Disease
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.
