Rainbows
★ Colours and elements of nature
★ Following instructions and expressing results
★ Understanding sequencing words
Language:
Preparation
★ Prepare one copy of “How to create a
rainbow” and “Colours of the rainbow”
★ Materials: 4 glasses and water
★ Song and video:
The rainbow song
Procedure:
★ Play “I spy…” with the students naming the
colour of different objects in the classroom in
order to elicit their prior knowledge related to
colours.
★ Ask students what they know about
rainbows. Brainstorm on the board their
ideas. Pupils may need help with this
vocabulary (rain, sun. light, etc); therefore,
flashcards could be useful.
★ Ask students to listen and watch the video from
www.makemegenius.com/ called “Rainbow
formation: How & Why”. Ask them to say and
repeat the colours of the rainbow to make sure
that all colours are remembered
★ Divide students in groups of no more than 4 and
explain them that they are going to create a
rainbow.
★ Give out the copy “How to create a rainbow” to
each student. Read it outloud and model the
experiment.
★ Give each group a glass of water and ask them
to read again and follow the instructions to make
their rainbow
Student’s production
Give each student a copy of “Colours of the
rainbow” and ask them to write the names of
the colours in the rainbow in the right order.
In order to do so, they will have to go back to
the result of their experiment to see the
correct order of colours as they appear in
rainbows.
Then, ask the pupils to colour it.
Extension
Together with the Art teacher, create a
CHALK FEST at the playground in order to
show the complete process of how rainbows
are created. Pupils can work in small groups
drawing on the floor. During the break they
can show their project to the rest of the
students at school.

Clil lesson plan: Rainbows

  • 2. ★ Colours and elements of nature ★ Following instructions and expressing results ★ Understanding sequencing words Language:
  • 3. Preparation ★ Prepare one copy of “How to create a rainbow” and “Colours of the rainbow” ★ Materials: 4 glasses and water ★ Song and video: The rainbow song
  • 4. Procedure: ★ Play “I spy…” with the students naming the colour of different objects in the classroom in order to elicit their prior knowledge related to colours. ★ Ask students what they know about rainbows. Brainstorm on the board their ideas. Pupils may need help with this vocabulary (rain, sun. light, etc); therefore, flashcards could be useful.
  • 5. ★ Ask students to listen and watch the video from www.makemegenius.com/ called “Rainbow formation: How & Why”. Ask them to say and repeat the colours of the rainbow to make sure that all colours are remembered ★ Divide students in groups of no more than 4 and explain them that they are going to create a rainbow. ★ Give out the copy “How to create a rainbow” to each student. Read it outloud and model the experiment. ★ Give each group a glass of water and ask them to read again and follow the instructions to make their rainbow

  • 7. Student’s production Give each student a copy of “Colours of the rainbow” and ask them to write the names of the colours in the rainbow in the right order. In order to do so, they will have to go back to the result of their experiment to see the correct order of colours as they appear in rainbows. Then, ask the pupils to colour it.
  • 8. Extension Together with the Art teacher, create a CHALK FEST at the playground in order to show the complete process of how rainbows are created. Pupils can work in small groups drawing on the floor. During the break they can show their project to the rest of the students at school.
