2. What is Client-Centered Therapy?
It is a school of therapy that allows the client to direct the growth of the
sessions.
It’s two primary goals are increased self-awareness and greater openness
to experiences.
It was created by Carl Rogers who based his work on Combs and Snygg.

Prochaska and Norcross (2003).

from 1902-1987.
He received an award of
distinction for his
contributions to the
American Psychological
Association in 1956.
His theory reached its hay
day in the 1960’s.
6. There are 19 propositions to this theory.
As a result of interaction with the
environment , an evaluation of self is
formed.
The best vantage point for
understanding is from the internal
frame work of the client.
Behavior is basically a goal directed
attempt of the client to satisfy needs
as experienced.
As an individuals perceives and
accepts into his self structure his
organic experience.
7. “
”
We think we listen but rarely do
we do so with real
understanding, true empathy.
CARL ROGERS
By truly listening to our clients, we create empathy between us and them.
9. How to achieve the objective of
helping
Empathy
To go through “it” with a client
without losing the as if quality of
the experience (boundaries)
Congruence
Keeping it real
Letting your actions and your
body truly mirror what you are
saying
Unconditional
Positive Regard
Relaying that no matter what
you feel this client has worth
and intrinsic value as a human
being.
10. When these objectives
are reached the client
can find joy in taking
an active role in their
healing and recovery.
The result of the
conditions being
reached is that the
client should have an
environment where
they can accept
themselves and
change.
