This document discusses the classification of different animal species using a dichotomous key. It provides instructions for students to work in teams to identify eight animals using a dichotomous key within four minutes. The teams then present their answers, which are then corrected. The first team to correctly identify all eight animals in order wins. Key terminology for the activity is also defined.

7. Dichotomous Key
A dichotomous key is a tool that allows the
user to determine the identity of items in the
natural world, such as trees, wildflowers,
mammals, reptiles, rocks, and fish (living or
non-living). Keys consist of a series of
choices that lead the user to the correct
name of a given item. "Dichotomous" means
"divided into two parts". Therefore,
dichotomous keys always give two choices
in each step.

8. We are looking for the best taxonomists here!
• There will be 5 teams and you will be
put in a team.
• Each team are responsible for using
the key to properly identifying all eight
animals in 4 minutes.
• Each member of the team should
write the correct number and in the
right order on her/his sheet !
• You are not allowed to get any help
from anywhere/anyone except your
group members! Otherwise, your
group will be disqualified.
• Always be polite to your team
members and other classmates.

• Select one team representative to take
one animal for identification at every
turn.
• This team member also returns the
animal after the turn and exchanges it
for another one.
• If you cannot identify the animal on
the key, return it and select another
one.
• The very first team to finish and show
the correct answers on the key wins!
