4. Function of Legislature
 To pass laws to protect the different rights of the
citizens and to ensure the progress of the country and
the society. The legislature is entrusted mainly with the
responsibility of creating such laws.
 Our central legislature is called the Parliament.

5.  The Central legislature has two houses – the Lok Sabha and the
Rajya Sabha

6. The Indian Parliament consists of the
1) President, and two houses –
2) the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) and
3) the House of the People (Lok Sabha).

8.  The President is a part of the legislature because we have
accepted the British Parliamentary System. In Britain, the
Parliament consists of the Queen, the House of Commons and the
House of Lords.
 The Parliament has been divided into two houses because we
have accepted a Federal System of Government.
 The Lok Sabha is the lower house and
 The Rajya Sabha is the upper house.

 The term of the Lok Sabha is 5

 The President has the power to

 The term of a member of the Rajya
Sabha is 6 years.
 The Rajya Sabha is not dissolved at the
end of the term.
 The Rajya Sabha is a permanent

 The members of the Rajya Sabha are
elected by the elected members of the
State Assemblies.
 'The Council of States shall consist of
12 members to be nominated by the
President, and not more than 238
representatives of the States and the
Union Territories.'
