2. Savvy Spenders Unit
During this unit, students will be working
with time and money through problem
solving. During the four week project,
students will be assigned daily jobs
throughout the class. They will be
rewarded each day with their daily salary.
The students are responsible for
budgeting their daily plans with their own
money.

What do you value the most?
Unit Question:
How does the American currency system compare
to other countries?
How do you use math on a job?
Content Question:
What is money used for?
How many dimes equal $1?
What is the difference between a need and a
want?
4. Role of the Teacher
The primary role of the teacher is to act as a
facilitator. I will primarily be guiding the
students to promote proper spending,
schedule individual conferences
throughout the week to check for
comprehension of new knowledge, and
answer questions when needed.
5. Role of the Student
The students are actively engaged in
learning through participating in a project
during a four week time frame. They are
responsible for reflections each day and
coming up with a realistic budget for
themselves.
6. Role of Parent
At the end of our project, the students and I
will host an open house day for parents to
come in and participate in presenting our
projects. The students will have completed
a unit on time and money and will be
"Savvy Spenders."
7. Benefits
This unit provides the students to actively
engage in 21st century skills at a young
age such as critical thinking, collaboration,
and self motivation. This unit also covers
standards and objectives for their grade
level listed in the Alabama Course of
Study.
9. Objectives
MA(2003)(2)Determine the monetary value
of sets of coins and bills up to $2.00.
MA(2010)(2)Using addition and subtraction
within 100 to solve one and two step word
problems involving situations of adding to,
taking from, putting together, taking apart,
and comparing with unknowns in all
positions.
10. Project-Based Learning
Savvy Spenders is modeled by the project
based learning approach in my classroom.
Project based learning is a research based
practice to engage students in learning. It
stimulates the students motivation to learn
through classroom projects and
collaboration with peers.
