1. Myself and Simple Math This presentation is designed to provide an overview of upcoming class activities
2. Overview of Upcoming Unit Plans The main purpose of this presentation is to inform you on the project that will begin with in the next few weeks of class. The title of the project is “Myself and Simple Math” and will be progressing throughout the next month and a half. The activities in this unit will follow the objectives of: Classroom projects that incorporate technology Your child will complete a project where they make a creative math book. Students will work in groups and use collaboration to complete the project. Students will become familiar with using technology to conduct research.
3. Project-based learning? For those of you who are not familiar with project-based learning it is simply learning centered around projects. More specifically, project-based learning is an active approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges, simultaneously developing cross-curriculum skills while working in small collaborative groups. In my class, project based learning will be used throughout the course of the year with about 4 projects.
4. Role of Teacher My role throughout this project will be to facilitate and make sure that groups are progressing through the unit in a timely matter. I will not do the work for the students, but I will help students with understanding. Students will be given due dates for each activity and before the project even begins they will receive a rubric so that they know exactly how each activity in the project will be graded.
5. Expected Roles of Students Students will be responsible for planning, designing, and editing their groups creative story book. Each student will have a specific job that must be incorporated into the story book. At the end of the project each group will present their story book to the class as well as parents.
6. Expected Roles of Parents Volunteers can be key to learning, so volunteers are always welcome: Parents…that’s you!! Parents you can help in a number of different ways including coming to class and being a guest speaker, bringing or sending in pictures that relate to the unit, or even help gather resources. Don’t hesitate, help is always needed!
7. Benefits and Standards The main benefit of this unit is that after completing this unit students should have an understanding of themselves more deeply and knowledge and understanding of counting, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing only numbers up to 20. This project will allow students to build 21st century skills and the instruction provided meets the needs of the students. For this unit we, as a class, should meet the following standards: Counseling and Guidance (2003)Grade(s): K - 1212.)
