Malaria remains a significant health issue, especially in Africa where nearly one million people died of the disease in 2008, mostly children. Pregnant women are also at high risk, facing potential miscarriage or maternal death. While cases have dropped 50% in some non-African countries, young children and those with HIV/AIDS remain vulnerable to infection and death. Efforts to raise awareness include World Malaria Day and emphasizing prevention through protective measures.

● In 2008, there were 247 million cases of
malaria and nearly one million deaths - mostly
among children living in Africa.
● In Africa a child dies every 45 seconds of
malaria; the disease accounts for 20% of all
childhood deaths.
● 22 Countries outside of Africa have reported
50% drop in Malaria cases.

● Young children who have not yet developed
protective immunity against severe diseases
are heavily at risk.
● Pregnant women are at risk as of high rates of
miscarriage up to 60% and maternal death
rates of 10-50%.
● People with HIV/AIDS are highly at risk of
infection and death.
