Partnership Proposal
City Awake Delegates is a nine-month interactive platform designed to mobilize and empower young adults to become
valued stakeholders in the civic dialogue of Greater Boston.
Boston is home to the largest proportion of young adults of any major US city, passing famously young cities such as
Austin and Washington. However, young adults – people between ages of 21 and 39 years old – are ignored and
overlooked when discussing the future of Greater Boston.
City Awake will select 500 Delegates – nominated representatives from a diverse coalition of up to 200 businesses,
nonprofits and select individuals – to participate in a series of programming focused on building community, exploring
various issues facing Greater Boston and formalizing shared priorities as a generation.

45%
Young adults make up more than a
third of Boston’s population, with even
higher percentages in Cambridge (44.5)
and Somerville (44)
Young adults make up about 45
percent of eligible voters and nearly
half the city’s workforce.
Young adults are an economic
engine, a $1 billion annually in goods
and services to Boston.

Phase 1: Connect & Explore (Fall 2016)
The first few months of the program will be
dedicated to building community and exploring
various issues facing Greater Boston.
Phase 2: Ideate & Actualize (Winer 2016-Spring
2017) The program will then transition to focus
on ideating and actualizing solutions to the issues
presented in Phase 1.
Retreats (10 attendees) – weekend retreats
where Delegates dive deeper into specific
issues and ideate possible solutions.
Labs (50-100 attendees) – design thinking
sessions to discuss and develop solutions.
End of Year Celebration (500+ attendees) – a
finale to recap the last year and to release a
report featuring the very best ideas proposed
by the Delegates to improve Greater Boston.
Our Convention (500+ attendees) – a day-
long summit at the Edward M. Kennedy
Institute where all 500 Delegates will
attend as an orientation and to start the
dialogue on the future of Greater Boston.
The event is scheduled for Monday,
September 26, 2016.
Forums (100-200 attendees) – TED style
presentations from issue experts and
leading entrepreneurs to educate the
Delegates on topical issues facing Greater
Boston.

Phase 3: Demand Building (Summer 2017)
The report released in Phase 2 will be the framework
for advancing discussion during local elections in
2017 – most specifically the Boston mayoral race.
Phase 4: Rinse & Repeat (Fall 2017)
Start programming for new cohort of 500 Delegates
and provide an alumni platform (“Superdelegates”)
for the previous class.
A majority of the programming will be optional to
Delegates. Polling will occur periodically throughout
the programming.
During Our Convention, for example, Delegates will
be asked to share their opinion on topical issues such
as charter schools and marijuana legalization. Both
issues are featured on upcoming ballot measures in
November 2016.

City Awake will partner with the Boston Indicators
Project - an initiative of the Boston Foundation.
Specifically, City Awake will incorporate eight issues
presented by the Boston Indicators Project and include
them as the foundation for its programming.
For example, there will be a forum, retreat and lab on each
specific issue (with sample sub topics) mentioned below.

  • 2. City Awake Delegates is a nine-month interactive platform designed to mobilize and empower young adults to become valued stakeholders in the civic dialogue of Greater Boston. Boston is home to the largest proportion of young adults of any major US city, passing famously young cities such as Austin and Washington. However, young adults – people between ages of 21 and 39 years old – are ignored and overlooked when discussing the future of Greater Boston. City Awake will select 500 Delegates – nominated representatives from a diverse coalition of up to 200 businesses, nonprofits and select individuals – to participate in a series of programming focused on building community, exploring various issues facing Greater Boston and formalizing shared priorities as a generation. • 3. 33% $1B 45% Young adults make up more than a third of Boston’s population, with even higher percentages in Cambridge (44.5) and Somerville (44) Young adults make up about 45 percent of eligible voters and nearly half the city’s workforce. Young adults are an economic engine, a $1 billion annually in goods and services to Boston. A P R O G R A M O F T H E G R E A T E R B O S T O N C H A M B E R O F C O M M E R C E
  • 4. Phase 1: Connect & Explore (Fall 2016) The first few months of the program will be dedicated to building community and exploring various issues facing Greater Boston. Phase 2: Ideate & Actualize (Winer 2016-Spring 2017) The program will then transition to focus on ideating and actualizing solutions to the issues presented in Phase 1. Retreats (10 attendees) – weekend retreats where Delegates dive deeper into specific issues and ideate possible solutions. Labs (50-100 attendees) – design thinking sessions to discuss and develop solutions. End of Year Celebration (500+ attendees) – a finale to recap the last year and to release a report featuring the very best ideas proposed by the Delegates to improve Greater Boston. Our Convention (500+ attendees) – a day- long summit at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute where all 500 Delegates will attend as an orientation and to start the dialogue on the future of Greater Boston. The event is scheduled for Monday, September 26, 2016. Forums (100-200 attendees) – TED style presentations from issue experts and leading entrepreneurs to educate the Delegates on topical issues facing Greater Boston. • 5. Phase 3: Demand Building (Summer 2017) The report released in Phase 2 will be the framework for advancing discussion during local elections in 2017 – most specifically the Boston mayoral race. Phase 4: Rinse & Repeat (Fall 2017) Start programming for new cohort of 500 Delegates and provide an alumni platform (“Superdelegates”) for the previous class. A majority of the programming will be optional to Delegates. Polling will occur periodically throughout the programming. During Our Convention, for example, Delegates will be asked to share their opinion on topical issues such as charter schools and marijuana legalization. Both issues are featured on upcoming ballot measures in November 2016.
