Welcome to HUBweek
There is a unique concentration of brainpower, ingenuity and creativity in the
Greater Boston region; it draws people from around the world and from every
industry. The unifying characteristic is a willingness to attack big problems, and
a focus on creating a better future at both a local and global level. It is with this
belief that The Boston Globe, Harvard University, MIT and Massachusetts General
Hospital joined forces three years ago to found HUBweek.
The challenges we face today—as individuals, as citizens, as a global population—
demand an openness to new ideas and points of view. They demand fierce collab-
oration and a willingness to work across aisle and across industry.
HUBweek serves as a platform to support and strengthen the
innovation ecosystem here in Boston—and to connect more
people to it from here and abroad.
We believe in inclusivity, and above all, impact, and remain ever committed to bring-
ing together problem solvers at HUBweek to trigger new ideas and spark solutions.
That’s why this year’s HUBweek is all about connections. For the first time, we’ll be
transforming Boston’s City Hall Plaza into a first-of-its-kind centralized festival site to
bring together thousands of smart, creative and curious people in one place. Expect
1x1 mentorship opportunities, large scale live arts experiences and installations, a
multi-day ideas festival with leading thinkers, a massive startup showcase, creative
spaces to connect with fellow attendees, and much, much more.
HUBweek is truly a civic endeavor and would not be possible without the support—
and early years of faith—by our sponsors, collaborators, and community partners.
This year, we’re proud to continue to expand, with more than 180 collaborating orga-
nizations and over 500 speakers and artists behind HUBweek.
If you’re curious about the future being
built at the intersections of art, science, and
technology, we hope you’ll join us this year
at HUBweek. We promise an experience
that will leave you inspired, empowered, and
more deeply connected. And, equally as
important, we hope you have some fun.
We’ll see you at HUBweek.

48 ZEPHYR
Clint Baclawski
Drawing inspiration from the pioneering spirit of
the California Light and Space movement, this work
moves the medium into newly de-constructed ground
beyond the tradition and constraints of a photo-
graphic frame. Light itself is reconfigured. The bulb
becomes the medium. The photographic image takes
an unexpected form like the stanzas of a sonnet or
the sequencing of notes in a music composition.
We’re looking for great designers, engineers, project
managers and other creative types to help us fill up our

unfettered experimentation, and a bold graphic line,
joined with a vivid, fantastical sense of color.
IMAGINE (AKA SNEHA SHRESTHA)
IMAGINE (aka Sneha Shrestha) is an artist and edu-
cator from Kathmandu, Nepal. She has established
herself as a Nepali street artist meshing the Nepali
alphabet and the Boston street art scene. Her works
can be described as thoughtful yet irreverent pieces,
marrying the beauty of an elegant script with the
droll text she often incorporates into her canvases.
In 2013, Sneha established Nepal’s first Children’s Art
Museum.
KENJI NAKAYAMA
Kenji Nakayama is an artist who lives and works in
Boston. His diverse practice encompasses careful
pinstriping and gilded lettering, abstract line com-
positions, and handcut, multi-layered stencil paint-
ings. Regardless of form, all of his work serves as a
personal diary of experience and influence, and his
process can be described as a balance between medi-
tation and highlytrained craftsmanship.
LIZ JAFF

Marka27’s foray into the art world began in the city’s
streets mastering the art of graffiti. Advancing to
earn his BFA from The Museum School of Fine Arts
in Boston, Marka27 became a household name for
his “audio canvas” series and elaborately executed
installation art and murals. Largely inspired by multi
cultural influences, Marka27’s art has served as a
reflection of his varying interests.
PERCY FORTINI-WRIGHT
Percy Fortini-Wright is a Boston based artist who
received both his BFA and MFA from the Art Institute
of Boston at Lesley University. While in his youth,
he started by writing graffiti, becoming a technician

Simultaneously, he evolved as a traditional painter of
city scenes, abstract and classical painting.
ROB GIBBS
Rob “Problak” Gibbs grew up in Roxbury, MA ven-
turing between Lenox St. apartments and Orchard
Park projects. From a young age, he had a vision of
beautifying the ghettos of Boston with graffiti art — an
art form that is frequently overlooked, undervalued
and misunderstood. His work impels the viewer to
allow imagination to become a playground for testing
boundaries and breaking rules.

THE A.I. REVOLUTION IN MEDICINE
Hosted by Massachusetts General Hospital
Thursday, October 12, 9:00AM-12:00PM
The HUB, Boston’s City Hall Plaza
Artificial intelligence (A.I.) and deep learning have
the potential to transform the field of medicine in the
coming decade by improving physicians’ ability to
quickly and more accurately diagnose and treat cer-
tain conditions. The Center for Clinical Data Science
at Massachusetts General Hospital and The Brigham
and Women’s Hospital is at the forefront of helping
to shape the discussion and use of A.I. to improve
medical outcomes.
The possibilities — and challenges — are endless for
clinicians, researchers, managers and policy-makers.
Issues from data accessibility and safety, to validation
and testing, to future staffing have significant implica-
tions for clinical practices of the future. In this highly
interactive session, experts involved in using A.I. in
the fields of radiology and guided imaging, surgery
planning, and in resource-poor settings will discuss
their own experiences in overcoming obstacles and
moving this important work forward. Join experts
in exploring big questions of addressing public fear
of A.I., the future of government regulation, ethical
questions and more.
Speakers: Katherine P. Andriole, PhD (FSIIM,
Director of Research Strategy and Operations at
the MGH BWH Center for Clinical Data Science),

INNOVATIONS IN OPIOID TREATMENT
AND RECOVERY
Hosted by Massachusetts General Hospital
Friday, October 13, 1:00-4:00PM
The HUB, Boston City Hall Plaza
It’s been said that substance use disorder is the only
disease where people go to prison when they relapse.
Massachusetts clinicians, researchers and community
activists are helping to change the narrative of treat-
ment and recovery by viewing addiction as a chronic
condition like diabetes or asthma with periods of
relapse and recovery over time. Based on the latest
neuroscience, this new perspective has the poten-
tial to radically change community response to the
opioid epidemic, reduce stigma, and bring hope to
individuals, families and communities affected by this
nationwide challenge.
Massachusetts General Hospital hosts this highly
interactive, how-to “course” with some of Boston’s
leading innovators in addiction treatment and recov-
ery. The format is designed to help you implement
promising innovations in their own organizations and
communities. A reception and networking opportu-
nity will conclude the program.
Speakers: David Barash, MD (Chief Medical
Officer, GE Foundation), Monica Bharel, MD, MPH
(Commissioner, Massachusetts Department of
Public Health), Michael Botticelli (Executive Director
Grayken Center for Addiction Medicine, Boston
Medical Center), Jessie Gaeta, MD (Medical
Director, Boston HealthCare for the Homeless),
Martha Kane, PhD (Director, Center for Addiction
Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital),
Laura Kehoe, MD, MPH (Medical Director the Bridge
Clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital),
Sarah Mackin (Boston Public Health Commission,

Initiative at Massachusetts General Hospital),

Fellowship Program, Boston Medical Center)
