An outline of the approach to transforming public space in Belfast by encouraging people to view their city as a gallery - the everyday art as well as the commissioned art

Jay Pather presents on the Cape Town public art festival, Infecting the City: Public art has always been part of who we are on this continent and in this country. The interconnectedness of the African “us” has often been impeded however, throwing people apart and far away from each other, creating a physical and psychic separation. Infecting the City is a small attempt at igniting this interconnectedness through artistic expression, making public space public.

With the importance of parks growing in the public's consciousness, now is the time to question what distinguishes great parks. Project for Public Spaces has identified nine strategies that help parks achieve their full potential to become active, multi-use, accessible, inclusive, safe public spaces that enhance neighborhoods and catalyze local economic development, highlight community authenticity and support multiple users.

Up the Ratios Bylaws - a Comprehensive Process of Our Organizationuptheratios
Up the Ratios is a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the gap in STEM education for underprivileged students by providing free, high-quality learning opportunities in robotics and other STEM fields. Our mission is to empower the next generation of innovators, thinkers, and problem-solvers by offering a range of educational programs that foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
At Up the Ratios, we believe that every student, regardless of their socio-economic background, should have access to the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in today's technology-driven world. To achieve this, we host a variety of free classes, workshops, summer camps, and live lectures tailored to students from underserved communities. Our programs are designed to be engaging and hands-on, allowing students to explore the exciting world of robotics and STEM through practical, real-world applications.
Our free classes cover fundamental concepts in robotics, coding, and engineering, providing students with a strong foundation in these critical areas. Through our interactive workshops, students can dive deeper into specific topics, working on projects that challenge them to apply what they've learned and think creatively. Our summer camps offer an immersive experience where students can collaborate on larger projects, develop their teamwork skills, and gain confidence in their abilities.
In addition to our local programs, Up the Ratios is committed to making a global impact. We take donations of new and gently used robotics parts, which we then distribute to students and educational institutions in other countries. These donations help ensure that young learners worldwide have the resources they need to explore and excel in STEM fields. By supporting education in this way, we aim to nurture a global community of future leaders and innovators.
Our live lectures feature guest speakers from various STEM disciplines, including engineers, scientists, and industry professionals who share their knowledge and experiences with our students. These lectures provide valuable insights into potential career paths and inspire students to pursue their passions in STEM.
Up the Ratios relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers to continue our work. Contributions of time, expertise, and financial support are crucial to sustaining our programs and expanding our reach. Whether you're an individual passionate about education, a professional in the STEM field, or a company looking to give back to the community, there are many ways to get involved and make a difference.
We are proud of the positive impact we've had on the lives of countless students, many of whom have gone on to pursue higher education and careers in STEM. By providing these young minds with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed, we are not only changing their futures but also contributing to the advancement of technology and innovation on a broader scale.

Russian anarchist and anti-war movement in the third year of full-scale warAntti Rautiainen
Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.

City as a Gallery presentation
1. City as a gallery
I and II
A Belfast City Council project,
programmed and delivered by PLACE
2. What did we want to
achieve?
• Deliver high-quality visual arts
• Make people more aware of art in the city
• Encourage people to move around the city
• Support artists to develop their arts practice
In 2016, Belfast City Council and PLACE collaborated to run City as a gallery – two , three-month long programmes of visual arts exhibitions, installations and other special events. Some of these activities were specially commissioned. Some were already happening, and we worked with partner organisations to include them in the programme. As the name suggests, however, it was all curated under a common theme: City as a gallery is about art not in galleries, but art on our streets, in our parks, on the buildings that surround us.
We wanted to
Deliver a programme of high-quality visual arts that would
Make people more aware of the art that surrounds us everyday, everywhere by increasing the visibility of art on our streets
Help people feel safe and welcome moving around the city to view the art -- in phase 1, the art was arranged along a route running east—west; in phase 2, it ran north—south
Support artists develop their arts practice
What did we learn? Having run City as a Gallery twice now, we are taking some time to review the project and plan its next stage. And we thought that these might be useful to anyone else thinking of running a similar project.
Need a foundation of trust. Commissioner (BCC) needs to trust the programmer (PLACE). Programmer needs to trust the artist. We did this by keeping an open brief, focusing on shared outcomes, rather than numbers or outputs. Yes, it is slightly riskier, but this is where the learning, innovation and development happens – which are themselves outcomes we wanted to achieve through this project.
Curatorial control is very important, otherwise the concept can be diluted and diminished. In retrospect, some of the partnership events weren’t the best fit for the brief, e.g. they took place in a gallery space.
Impact on the physical environment – not the reason why we did City as a Gallery, but it was a real benefit
Not sure how much the project mobilised people and got them to travel outside their comfort zones, and even if they did, would they do so again? But there was an impact on inner-city communities – having the art in their area made people feel proud and valued
Impact on the private sector – will they be more receptive of the arts projects in the future? E.g. private landlords, Road Service
Marketing is very important, and the most effective platform seems to be two-way, not just saying “Come here and see this”, but asking, “What do you think of this?”
It is difficult to evaluate – some events were commissioned, some were happening anyway and had their own evaluation process, or at least, motivations; some were indoors, some, outdoors; some happened over time; some lasted moments; some were advertised in advance; some were more pop-up style; most were free, a few needed tickets booked.
