As the dashboard model grows traction and is embraced by Australian governments, this paper reflects on the institutional design of city dashboards, as they cut across the worlds of ICT policy and strategic urban planning. Based on recent case study research across Sydney, London and New York, this presentation compares a series of dashboard examples with a view to understanding the relationship between data-driven discovery programs, open data release channels or platforms, and the mechanisms of city performance management and strategic planning. In particular, it addresses the ‘back end’ support programs that support data discovery and harvesting; the challenges of persistent ‘data shadows’; and the forums needed to support alignment between data discovery, citizen engagement and strategic planning.

Smart cities, with their “intelligent urban infrastructures”, promise greater civic participation, reduced waste, less traffic and a more capable government. But what are citizens sacrificing in return? How much do we want our cities to think for us? And are there benefits to “dumb cities” and their inconveniences?
In this battle-it-out presentation, Marissa Gluck and Christine Outram will fight to the finish about whether intelligent urban infrastructures are really capable of creating more livable, sustainable and economically viable cities.
Christine, will play the role of techno-determinist, convinced of technologies ability to improve our cities, without eroding civil liberties. Meanwhile, Marissa will play devils advocate, arguing that these new technologies will erase privacy, chance, serendipity and the beauty that comes from reduced automation and control.
This presentation was delivered at STLX 2019; the conference for user experience professionals in the St. Louis region. The content discussed two frameworks from city planning and discussed their current relevance and future application for those designing experiences with technology.

The open data landscape in Bristol is evolving rapidly. This special meetup will update South West Data on recent developments, including an opportunity for the Meetup to become the City's official Open Data Institute (ODI) network - kickstarting ODI Bristol with an established network of data experts to which the ODI Node would bring data producers and data consumers into the mix.
In January 2015, Kevin O'Malley, Bristol City Council, gave a well-received talk to a packed meetup about Bristol is Open and the Open Programmable City API. One year on he will be returning to talk about ODI Bristol and update the group on additions to the City's open data portfolio, including Bristol API (Transport).
There's also a lot going on in open data in the region, outside of Bristol City Council and Jen Williams, from NetworkedPlanet, will be pitching an idea for South West Data to host an Open Data Camp, an "unconference", which would involve taking over the Watershed for a weekend and a mix of local, national and international (un)delegates.
The meetup will allow time for, appropriately, open discussion, questions and answers from the speakers and the audience.
Tom Heath, Head of Research at ODI, Leigh Dodds, Senior Consultant at ODI, and Martin Howitt, from ODI Devon Node, will all be at hand to contribute to the discussion and answer questions.

AI contributes to smart cities’ decision making because smart decision-making utilizes a systematic and organized approach to collect data and applies rational decision-making systems rather than using hit and miss, instinct, or generalizing from overall experience.“Smart cities” is a multidimensional notion and has been defined differently by numerous scholars. However, the compulsory prerequisite to being a smart city is to attain sustainable social, environmental, and economic development and improve the living standards of society by utilizing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and AI. The technological aspect of a smart city in the decision-making process can be defined as “a technologically interconnected city” or the use of artificial intelligence with big data to accomplish the intelligence and efficiency in managing the city’s resource. A study about smart decision-making in smart cities using big data introduced a three-layer framework characterizing a smart city as an “instrumented, interconnected, and intelligence”.The past few years have seen rapid growth in urbanization. According to the economic and social affairs body of the United States, approximately 55 percent of the total population in the world live in urban cities. This number is expected to increase to 68% by 2050 (Allam & Dhunny, 2019). The rapid increase in urban population is expected to exert pressure on sustainable environment initiatives leading to higher demand from the large population. To avoid such pressure, there is a need of coming up with smart cities. According to scholars, smart cities will reduce the environmental pressure caused by the increased urban population by 30% (Allam & Dhunny, 2019). A smart city is described as an urban area that depends on information technology to improve its quality of life, grow its economy and implement government policies (Allam & Dhunny, 2019). The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.
