Paris is the capital and largest city of France, located on the river Seine. With over 2 million residents within city limits and nearly 12 million in the metropolitan area, Paris was the largest and most populated city in Europe for nearly 1000 years between the 16th-19th centuries. Much of modern Paris resulted from vast 19th century urban redesign that leveled medieval neighborhoods to build wide avenues and neoclassical buildings. Popular sports teams in Paris include Paris Saint-Germain FC, Paris-Levallois Basket, and rugby union club Stade Français, with many matches played at the 80,000-seat Stade de France stadium.
