Police departments are increasingly using information technology tools like COMPSTAT to optimize performance and reduce crime. COMPSTAT implements the basic IS functions of inputting crime data, processing that data to identify crime patterns and hotspots, outputting actionable intelligence, and using feedback to respond faster to crime. This allows predictive policing by anticipating where and when crimes may occur. A SWOT analysis found strengths in improved partnerships and community support but also weaknesses in increased workload and training needs as well as threats from competing priorities and public expectations.
