Cirrostratus is a distributed storage system designed for private cloud infrastructures using commodity hardware. It aims to serve virtual disks without the performance overhead of distributed locking and caching mechanisms in traditional cluster file systems. By eliminating metadata and locking, Cirrostratus can scale storage capacity easily without bottlenecks. It also features multipath support, snapshots, erasure coding for data protection, and heatmaps to detect data usage patterns for tiered storage.

The upcoming many-core architectures require software developers to exploit concurrency to utilize available computational power. We argue that today's virtual machines (VMs), which are a cornerstone of software development, do not provide sufficient abstraction for concurrency concepts. To overcome this shortcoming, we propose to integrate concurrency operations into VM instruction sets.
Since there will always be VMs optimized for special purposes, our goal is to develop a methodology to design instruction sets with concurrency support. Therefore, we also propose a list of tradeoffs that have to be investigated to advise the design of such instruction sets. As a first experiment, we implemented one instruction set extension for shared memory and one for non-shared memory concurrency. From our experimental results, we derived a list of requirements for a full-grown experimental environment for further research.

seed block algorithm
This document proposes a seed block algorithm and remote data backup server to help users recover files if the cloud is destroyed or files are deleted. The proposed system stores a backup of user's cloud data on a remote server. It uses a seed block algorithm that breaks files into blocks, takes their XOR, and stores the output to allow data to be recovered. The system was tested on different file types and sizes, showing it could recover same-sized files and required less time than existing solutions. Its applications include secure storage and access to information even without network connectivity.

"What is so new about the container environment that a new class of storage software is emerging to address these use cases? And can container orchestration systems themselves be part of the solution? As is often the case in storage, metadata matters here. We are implementing in the open source OpenEBS.io some approaches that are in some regards inspired by ZFS to enable much more efficient scale out block storage for containers that itself is containerized. The goal is to enable storage to be treated in many regards as just another application while, of course, also providing storage services to stateful applications in the environment."

The future of tape

In distributed applications where the number of members in the cluster increases, the
separation of the consensus related operations at the hardware level is essential for the
following reasons:
1. At the operating system level, messages broadcast on the protocol stack cause latency.
2. It is necessary to increase the number of completed transactions in the communication of
distributed system components and on the network unit (throughput).
3. For devices with limited storage and CPU computing facilities that use embedded operating
systems such as IOT devices, it is also necessary to reduce the processing burden due to
"consensus" operations.
4. A common consensus communication model is needed for different applications that need
to work together in (BFT) distributed systems.

Cloud computing is widely considered as potentially the next dominant technology in IT industry. It
offers basic system maintenance and scalable source management with Virtual Machines (VMs). As a essential
technology of cloud computing, VM has been a searing research issue in recent years. The high overhead of
virtualization has been well address by hardware expansion in CPU industry, and by software realization
improvement in hypervisors themselves. However, the high order on VM image storage remains a difficult
problem. Existing systems have made efforts to decrease VM image storage consumption by means of
deduplication inside a storage area network system. Nevertheless, storage area network cannot assure the
increasing demand of large-scale VM hosting for cloud computing because of its cost limitation. In this project,
we propose SILO, improved deduplication file system that has been particularly designed for major VM
deployment. Its design provide fast VM deployment with similarity and locality based fingerprint index for data
transfer and low storage consumption by means of deduplication on VM images. And implement heart beat
protocol in Meta Data Server (MDS) to recover the data from data server. It also provides a comprehensive set of
storage features including backup server for VM images, on-demand attractive through a network, and caching
through local disks by copy-on-read techniques. Experiments show that SILO features execute well and introduce
minor performance overhead.

IBM Cloud Object Storage is a scalable, secure, and cost-efficient solution for storing unstructured data in the cloud or on-premises. It uses dispersed storage technology to store data across multiple sites ensuring high availability without the need for complex replication or RAID schemes. This allows IBM COS to manage petabytes or exabytes of data with a small number of administrators at a lower cost than traditional storage solutions which require more raw storage capacity and replication across multiple sites. IBM COS offers flexibility in deployment as either an integrated appliance, software-defined storage, or cloud service across private, hybrid, and public cloud environments.
PowerAlluxio
This document describes PowerAlluxio, an in-memory file system that improves on Alluxio by enabling shared memory utilization across cluster nodes while maintaining memory locality. PowerAlluxio allows client nodes to utilize remote node memory if local memory is full, improving cluster memory usage without sacrificing performance. It also introduces a new Smart LRU eviction policy that reduces elapsed time by 24.76% for large datasets. Experiments showed PowerAlluxio achieved up to 14.11x faster task completion times compared to Alluxio when data could be fully cached.

Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
