Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico's victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, not Mexican independence. It is primarily celebrated in Mexico in the state of Puebla and in areas of the United States with large Mexican-American populations like Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. While tequila is associated with Cinco de Mayo, worms are not actually found in tequila bottles but some types of mezcal from Oaxaca may contain larvae.
