• 50,000 teachers leave each year.
• Only 27% are retiring
• Recruitment is barely enough, student numbers are
growing. The problem is 'closing the back door.'
S O M E C O N C L U S I O N S
• SLT will be forced to consider wellbeing, the better leaders
already are.
• We will need to keep and support teachers we have. 'Love
the one you're with.' (Tomsett)
• Don’t worry, this is a buyer’s market.
• Despite attempted government initiatives - there are no
magic wands in the system, so we need to begin to look
after ourselves.
• This is both psychological and practical
I D E N T I T Y
• 'I am just a teacher.'
• JUST - minimising the role
• JUST - I am nothing else
• How do we avoid identity theft?
T H O U G H T E X P E R I M E N T
• You are no longer a teacher? What now?
• How will you spend your time? Who will you be with?
Where will you be?
• And if that’s difficult…
E N E R G Y
• ‘Manage your energy not your time’
• Try to think ‘Time not task'
• Studies of productivity show that 50 hours a week is
fine, 50-55 hours diminishing returns, 56+ no gains.
• TIP: Drawing a finishing line - clocking off
