A food chain is a linear series of
organisms illustrating a one-way
route of feeding relationship.
Food energy is passed from one
organism to another through a
sequence of events.

3. PRODUCERS
Food chains always begin with plants.
Plants can capture the sun’s energy,
which they use for photosynthesis.
Because they can make their own
food that they an use for their own
growth and development, they are
called producers.

4. CONSUMERS
Many organisms can’t make their own food.
They eat plats or other organisms. Organisms
that eat other living things are called
consumers. Consumers get energy from food
made by other food they eat. Consumers can
be grouped according to the food they eat.
Herbivores are plant-eating animals,
carnivores are meat-eating animals, and
omnivores are the plant- and meat-eating
animals.

5. CONSUMERS
A food chain includes a series of consumers.
For example, in a food chain in which rabbit
eats grass and an owl eats the rabbit, both the
rabbit and the owl are consumers. But
because the rabbit feeds on grass, it is the
primary consumer, while the owl that feeds on
the rabbit is the secondary consumer.

6. SCAVENGERS & DECOMPOSERS
Some consumers feed on dead bodies of
organisms; they are called scavengers. After
the scavengers have fed on the dead
organisms, millions of tiny organisms called
decomposers take over. Decomposers such
as bacteria and fungi break down the tissues
of dead organisms.
