This is a bilingual English-Chinese presentation by Mr. Babacar Salif Gueye, technical advisor, Ministry of Environment of Senegal, on promoting legality in the China-Senegal timber trade. The presentation was made at the third event of the China-Africa Forest Governance Learning Platform, held in Beijing 24-25 October 2016. The event explored how China can help sustain Africa’s forests with a focus on the role of private sector actors and Chinese stakeholders in working with African stakeholders to promote pro-poor and sustainable investments and trade in Africa’s forests. 6. Legal status of Pterocarpus erinaceus in Senegal

 The export of logs is illegal (Forest Code 1993) when Pterocarpus
erinaceus was listed as a semi protected species

 Cutting of species under ‘national quota system’ but is strictly for the
processing by national sawmills

 All imports of rosewood logs from Senegal to Gambia we consider illegal

 95% are also classified as ‘conflict timber’ if they originate in the
