Children and Cyberbullying

Research context

KOKO’s research into bullying worryingly reveals that
70% of children suffer some form of bullying and that
cyber bullying is increasing dramatically.

Children are more likely than ever to suffer nasty or
aggressive texts, emails, and messaging, as well as

bullying in chat rooms.

KOKO’s study of 3,052 children aged 6 to 14 reveals
that members of its safe social learning networks are
far less likely to be bullied than other children.

3052 rigorously authenticated children sampled from a
population of over 120,000 taken from 13,000+ UK
classrooms

Members of SuperClubsPLUS (6-12) and GoldStarCafe
(11-14) protected social learning networks

Demographics: broadly representative of UK
population in location, gender, ethnicity, religion,

Cyberbullying

The vast majority of members of KOKO’s safe social learning networks, who are
well protected in these communities, do not visit any other social networking sites,
and are therefore far less exposed to the possibilities of cyber-bullying.

“My Year Sixes were asked for advice and replied ‘use a safe moderated site like
SuperClubsPLUS and there’s no problem’. In 2006 we had over 30 pupils using

unsuitable sites in years 5 and 6, but having done the same questionnaire
recently, there were only 3 – the rest were using SuperClubsPLUS.” - Janet
Stockburn, Teacher, Worcester

KOKO research conﬁrms Janet’s observations. In a previous study for DCSF,
KOKO found that only 6% of it’s members used other social sites. In the current
study 7% said they had been cyber-bullied outside their safe social learning
networks.

What worries you online?

Children were asked what worries them when they are online outside
their safe social learning networks.

“I think that the emails sometimes affend me.
Some one from my school called me fat and he
does at school too!”

“incase someone invites me 2 there house
which has happened before”

pretending to be a child.”

scared of that”




“I worry that someone might trace me or my

“The people who bully often are the ones who

everyone likes, if they want to pick on someone
then they get everyone to help which is very
hard to ignore or get yourself out of.”

really trust anyone online.”
