• Someone who is below 14 years of age is called Child.
• Adolescent – age between 14 to 18 years
What is Child Labour ?
International Labour Organisation (ILO) defines the term child labour as, “ work
that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that
is harmful to physical and mental development. It refers to work that is mentally,
physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful to children, or work whose
schedule interferes with their ability to attend their regular school or work that
affects in any manner their ability to focus during school or experience a healthy
childhood.”

4. Child work
• No child shall be employed or permitted to work in any occupation or
process unless the child helps his family or family enterprise which is
other than any hazardous occupations or processes, after his school
hours or during vacations.
• Adolescents ( 14 – 18 years ) – can engage in work as long as it is
not hazardous
• Children ( below 14 years ) – can help only under certain conditions

6. 5 Types of Hazardous works for children
1. Work with dangerous machinery, equipment and tools or which
involves manual handling or transport of heavy loads.
2. Work in an unhealthy environment which may expose children to
hazardous substances like pesticides.
3. Work under particularly difficult conditions e.g-in the heat, for long
hours or during the night.
4. Work under ground, under water, at dangerous heights, or in
confined spaces.
5. Work which exposes children to physical, psychological, or sexual
abuse.
7. Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act
1986.
• Any Person who violates the law can be punished
with Jail time of between 6 months to 2 years and/or
fine between Rs. 20000 and 50000
