people havebestowed on me theirblessings andtheirimmense
support.
I wouldlike toexpress my special thanksof gratitude tomy
teacherMr. RajendraSaha who gaveme thegolden opportunity to do
thiswonderfulproject on thetopic “To study theconstituentsof
alloys”which alsohelped me in doing a lotof research andI came to
know about so many new things. Secondly Iwould alsolike to thank
my parents andmy friends whohelped me a lotin finalizingthisproject
withinthe giventime.
Last but not theleastI wouldlike tothankallthepeople whohad
helpedme directlyor indirectlyduring the completion of thisproject.

INTRODUCTION
An alloyisamixtureofeither pureorfairly pure chemical elements, which formsan impuresubstance
(admixture)that retains thecharacteristics ofa metal. An alloyisdistinctfrom an impuremetal, such
as wroughtiron,in that, with an alloy, theadded impuritiesareusuallydesirable and will typicallyhavesome
useful benefit.Alloysare madebymixing two ormoreelements;atleast oneofwhich being ametal.Thisis
usuallycalled theprimarymetal or thebasemetal, and thenameofthismetal mayalso bethenameofthe
alloy.Theotherconstituents mayormaynotbemetalsbut,when mixed with themolten base,theywill
besoluble,dissolving into themixture.
Puremetals posses few importantand physical properties such as
boiling point,melting point,density,high malleability,
ductility,conductivityetc.Formanyhuman needs theextents of
these properties possessed bythesepure metalsdon’tbecome
much beneficial.
Therefore to improvethecharacteristics ,these metals are
combined with othermetalsand alloysare produced.Theterm
alloyisused to describe amixtureofatoms in which theprimary
constituentis ametal.

corrosionresistance.

AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT
GeneralObjective-Thisprojectisbeingcarriedouttogainknowledgeabout
alloys,itsusesandpreparationwhichisanimportantbranchofchemistry.The
adequateresearchandhand-onlaboratoryexperienceishighlybeneficialin
analyzingandunderstandingthechemistrybehindtheconstituentsofalloys.
Specificobjective-In thisproject,theconstituentsofalloysofbrassandbronze
havebeenqualitativelyanalyzed.
APPARATUS REQUIRED
 BrassandBronzepieces
 ChinaDishes
 Filtrationapparatus
 NitricAcid
 HydrogenSulphidegas
 AmmoniumChloride
 AmmoniumSulphide
 Dil.HydrochloricAcid
 Mercuric Chloride
 PotassiumFerroCyanide
THEORY
Brass
Brass contains Cuand Zn . Boththeions dissolve in 50%nitric acid duetotheformation of
nitrates whichare soluble.
4Zn+ 10HNO3 4Zn(NO3)2 + N2O + 5H2S
3Cu + 8HNO3 3Cu(NO3)2 + 4H2O+2NO
Asmall piece ofbrass is dissolvedin 50%nitric acid . After theremoval of excess nitric acid ,the
solution istested forCu2+
andZn2+
ions.
Bronze
Bronze contains Cuand Sn.Theirnitrates are obtainedbydissolving thesample in conc.Nitric
acid. Thenitrates are precipitated as sulphidesbypassing H2Sthroughtheirsolutionin dil.HCl.
TheCuS is insoluble in yellowammonium sulphide, while SnSissoluble. Theprecipitate is
separated byfiltration. Theprecipitate is dissolved in concentrated HNO3 andthen
Ammonium hydroxidesolution is passedthroughit. Blue colouration confirms the presense of
Cu.
Thefiltrate is treatedwithconcentrated HCl followed byZinc dusttoobtainSnCl2 .
ThenHgCl2 solutionis added. Formation ofslate-coloured precipitate indicates thepresence
ofSn.
SnS2 +HCl(conc.)= SnCl4 + H2S
SnCl4 +Fe= SnCl2+FeCl2
SnCl2 + HgCl2 = Hg2Cl2 + SnCl4
PROCEDURE
For Brass:
1.A smallpieceofbrasswaskeptina chinadishanddissolvedinminimum
quantityof50%concentratedHNO3 todissolveitcompletely.
2.Thesolutionwasheatedtoobtainadrysolidresidue.Theresiduewas
dissolvedinDiluteHCl.It wasdissolvedindil.HCl andfiltered.Distilledwater
wasthenaddedtothefiltrate.
3.H2SgaswaspassedthroughitandablackprecipitateofCuSO4 wasobserved.It
wasseparatedandkeptasidefortestingthepresenceofZn2+
ion.Thesolution
wasfilteredandtheprecipitatewasdissolvedinNH4OHsolution.Adeepblue
colorationobservedwhich indicatesthepresenceofCu2+
ioninthesolution.
4.ThefiltratewastestedforpresenceofZn2+
ions.Thefiltratewasboiledto
removeH2Sgas.Ammonium chloridesolutionwasadded.Tomakethesolution
ammonicalexcessNH4OHwasaddedfurther. ThenH2Sgaswaspassedthrough
thissolution.Adullwhiteorgreyprecipitatewasformed.Itwasthenseparated
anddissolvedinminimumamountofdil.HCl.Thesolutionwasboiledto
eliminateanyH2Sgas.ThenPotassiumferrocyanidewasadded.Abluishwhite
precipitatewasobservedwhichconfirmsthepresenceofZn2+
ionsinthe
solution.
ForBronze:
1.Thesamplewasdissolvedin50% HNO3 andthenheatedtoobtainnitrates.
2.Thenitratesweredissolvedindil.HCl andthenprecipitatedassulphidesby
passing H2S gas.
3.Theprecipitatesweretreatedwithyellowammoniumsulphidewhenapartof
it dissolves.Thesolutionwasfiltered.
4.Theprecipitate wastestedforCuasinthecaseofbrass.
5.Thefiltratewastreatedwithconc.HClfollowedbyFedust.
6.ThenHgCl2 solutionwasadded.Formationofaslate-colouredprecipitate
confirmedthepresenceofSn.
OBSERVATION
Brass containsCopper andZinc.
Bronze containsCopper and Tin.
