1. Chemistry lab report
Jennifer portillo.
Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to examine the different reactions
that baking soda will have with different substances, water, lemon juice, vinegar,
and powerade, and write the balanced chemical equations.
Hypothesis:
- When baking soda and water are combined there will be no reaction.
- When baking soda and lemon juice are combined there will be a reaction.
- When baking soda and vinegar are combined there will be no reaction.
- When baking soda and powerade are combined there will be a reaction.
-
Materials:
8 small paper cups
2 spoons
baking soda (arm & hammer)
vinegar (publix brand)
lemon juice
water (H2O)
powerade
Procedure: To begin with, four paper cups were placed in a desk. In the first
cup there was water, in the second cup there was lemon juice, in the third cup
there was vinegar, and in the fourth cup there was the drink of our choice which
was powerade. In the other four cups there was baking soda and after a cup of
baking soda was combined with each of the different substances. After each
substances were combined the results were waited for.
Data:
When water (H2O) and baking soda were combined there was no reaction. The
balanced chemical equation is H2CO3(aq) -> CO2(g) + H2O (g).
When lemon juice and baking soda were combined there was a reaction. The
balanced chemical equation is C6H8O7(aq) + 3NaHCO3(aq) -> Na2C6H6O7(aq) +
3CO2(g) + 3H2O(l)
When vinegar (NaHCO3) and baking soda were combined there was a reaction.
The balanced chemical equation is NaHCO3 + CH3COOH -> CH3COONa + CO2 +
H2O.
When powerade and baking soda were combined there was no reaction.
Conclusion: After the experiment was done, two of the expected hypothesis were
incorrect. When baking soda and water were combined there was no reaction
which was a correct hypothesis. When baking soda and lemon juice were
combined there was a reaction which was a correct hypothesis. When baking soda
2. and vinegar were combined there was a reaction which was opposite to the
hypothesis. When baking soda and powerade were combined there was no reaction
which was opposite to the hypothesis. Baking soda only reacted with lemon juice
and vinegar and it did not react with the two substances that had water which
were water and powerade.
