your audience understands the basic parameters of your argument.
For this proposal, you will write me (your professor) a letter that contains the following:

In this project we will explore the post-apocalyptic genre and how texts of this genre reflect issues
and anxieties coursing through everyday life.
You will begin this Project by reading and analyzing Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. During this
time, we will pay close attention to themes being built within the text that provide insight on
“real-world” issues. You will then conduct research of your own (using the CSUN databases) in
order to find evidence that supports your theme in that “real-world” context.
The essay itself will be an argument made by you with an explicit thesis that is proven with
evidence from our primary text: The Road, and at least three resources you have found on the
CSUN databases.
Basic Requirements:
- 6 page minimum with Works Cited (not included in page count)
- Standard MLA Format
- A completed essay packet.
- Essay needs to be posted to your Class Website AND turned in at the beginning of class.

In exploratory essays, the writer (you) explores three sources that take a position on a controversial issue. All three sources can take the same side of the issue or two can take the same side and one can be on the other side of the issue. For example, take this issue: “Should there be stricter copyright penalties on the Internet? For instance, all three sources explored may argue that once a person uploads a photograph on, for example, flickr.com, it becomes public domain and no copyright laws should apply. The sources explored will argue on the same side of the issue, they all answer the issue question: yes. Yet, they will present evidence that will align with their different perspectives. The Purpose

Our goal for this course is to engage thoughtfully, deeply, and creatively with our texts. To this end, all of your papers will reflect your engagement with our texts without (or with extremely minimal) recourse to secondary materials. There will be four formal writing assignments for the class: three short “abstracts” (1-2 pp) and one longer paper (5-6 pp). These assignments are all sustained close-reading assignments. Ideally, each paper will be an extension of the conversations that we’ve had in class and/or on various assignments. Your essays should reflect your individual engagement with our texts. They are not “research” papers or “reports”; you do not need to consult secondary sources. (You should use secondary sources only for verifying factual information, and only if this factual information is necessary for your argument – eg: confirming that Foucault's essay in part responds to Barthes'). The purpose of these papers is NOT to show that you’ve read the texts – I take it for granted that you’ve been doing the reading – or to reiterate an “expert” opinion.
Goals: to attack a single issue thoroughly (instead of trying to solve the mysteries of the universe in a short paper); to be attentive to the interaction between the stylistics and ideas of a text (the way that how the author tells a story through particular rhetorical choices influences our reading of what the text "means").
The abstract is so named (or misnamed) because you may be writing with an eye toward your longer paper. You will be doing a close reading of a short passage from one of the texts that we are studying. This may end up being the starting point for the longer paper, but need not be. The abstract is not, however, merely an informal paper proposal. While you may be thinking about it as a starting point for a longer essay, please also be aware that it will be graded as a close reading in its own right.
For this assignment you will:
1) Select and photocopy a short passage from one of the works we are studying. Your selection should be no more than two continuousparagraphs or half a page long, whichever is shorter. Attach this to your assignment.
2) Highlight (or underline or circle) two or three SHORT pieces of language (preferrably single words, but 3-4 word images are also fine) on the photocopy of the text you’ve chosen that together add up to a constellation of meaning that we may have missed on a casual reading. These short units should form a pattern that convincingly suggests the story's interest in a particular idea. Your chosen language should not just add up to a summary of the major theme of the text as a whole. Writing a Research Essay in International Relations and Political Science
This is some basic advice on writing an essay in International Relations. The advice is generic, and obviously particular assignments, topics, questions have their own requirements – but this general advice should apply most of the time.
Be aware of what a criteria grading sheet looks like, as this sets out the way in which the essay will be graded. The standard grading sheet looks like this, and you will notice that there are four separate criteria. We will deal with each in turn.
1. Structure/Organization: Have you answered the question? Do you have a clear argument that you defend throughout? Is it well organized with appropriate use of paragraphs?
2. Research: Are you demonstrating research skills? Have you used a range of sources? Is it thoroughly referenced, using an appropriate system, with a bibliography?
3. Content: Do you set out clear arguments/evidence to support your position? Have you considered counter-arguments/evidence? Is their evidence of critical thinking?
4. Presentation: Is the paper well-written? Is it proof-read for grammar and spelling errors?
1. Structure/Organisation
Essays need a clear and concise introduction, which sets out a position: the thesis or argument that the essay will defend. If a question has been set, the introduction needs to clearly answer this question. It does not provide a broad introduction to the topic (avoid waffle or ‘flowery’ introductions), but rather, specifies the particular position that the essay will pursue. The essay then defends this position clearly throughout! I strongly suggest beginning the essay with the line “This essay argues…”. If you can clearly set out your position at the start, it will solve a lot of the structural problems that many essays have. You can then use the rest of the introduction to expand on your argument, detail the case material you are using to support your position, explain how your position allows you to propose an answer to the question(if one is set), and outline the structure of the essay. When outlining the structure of the essay, using first, second, third can be a clear and informative approach for the reader.
The main body of the essay is organised in short, sharp, concise paragraphs. It is important to consistently link the material, ideas, theories, concepts, debates, arguments, evidence, and case studies that you evaluate in the main body of the essay back to the question, and to your argument. Though different courses and different types of written assignments have different objectives, normally it is a good idea to have a balance between theoretical/conceptual debates and discussion, and empirical evidence. Step THREE: Draw TWO meaningful comparisons between the two documents that reveals important insight into the historical period/topic of the week. The comparison may be any similarity or difference, but should focus on explaining how it helps historians understand the past. Think about how and why things happened the way they did. Figure out what you think is the most significant SIMILARITY between the two passages.
Consider the author's perspective (national origin, class, ideology etc) for each document.
STEP FOUR: If these documents were the source material for your research project, what would your preliminary research question or thesis statement be? This should be no more than two sentences and cover the main idea that you would try to argue.
Ex. Using the works of Robespierre and St. Just, this paper will argue that the violence of the French Revolution was created by their interpretation of the needs of the French nation rather than their philosophical beliefs.
Be ambitious but with limits. Lay out a provable case that makes a strong a point, regardless of whether you are fully convinced that it is the case. You will be evaluated on the composition and effect of the ideas rather than the perfectness of the answer.
Step FIVE: Create one discussion question that you can propose to the class during seminar. It should be a ‘why’ problem that poses an issue for debate rather than demanding a specific factual answer. Ex. ‘Why didn’t Frankenstein name the Creature?” instead of “Did Frankenstein name the Creature?”
Do NOT use quotations or paraphrase the document. You may refer to specific passages but do not summarize the document. “ex. Where Thomas Paine talked about hereditary right, he was focused on the legitimacy of an absolute monarchy.” The paper should consist entirely of your own ideas and opinions about the sources using a compare/contrast approach. Therefore, citations should never be required. If you do quote/paraphrase then include citations.

What This Handout is About…
This handout will explain what a Literature Review is and offer insights into the form and
construction of a Literature Review in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences.
Introduction
OK. You’ve got to write a literature review. You dust off your world literature
anthology book, settle down in your Ebert and Roper at the Movies theatre chair with
your popcorn and soda in hand, and get ready to issue a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down”
as you leaf through the pages. “Literature Review” done. Right?
Wrong! The “literature” of a literature review refers to any collection of materials on a
topic, not necessarily the Great Literary Texts of the World. “Literature” could be
anything from a set of government pamphlets on British colonial methods in Africa to
scholarly articles on the treatment of a torn ACL. And a review does not necessarily
mean that your reader wants you to give your personal opinion on whether or not you
liked these sources.
What is a literature review, then?
A literature review discusses published information in a particular subject area, and
sometimes information in a particular subject area within a certain time period.
A literature review can be just a simple summary of the sources, but it usually has an
organizational pattern and combines both summary and synthesis. A summary is a recap
of the important information of the source, but a synthesis is a re-organization, or a
reshuffling, of that information. It might give a new interpretation of old material or
combine new with old interpretations. Or it might trace the intellectual progression of the
field, including major debates. And depending on the situation, the literature review may
evaluate the sources and advise the reader on the most pertinent or relevant.
But how is a literature review different from an academic research
paper?
While the main focus of an academic research paper is to support your own argument, the
focus of a literature review is to summarize and synthesize the arguments and ideas of
others. The academic research paper also covers a range of sources, but it is usually a
select number of sources, because the emphasis is on the argument. Likewise, a literature
review can also have an “argument,” but it is not as important as covering a number of
sources. In short, an academic research paper and a literature review contain some of the
same elements. In fact, many academic research papers will contain a literature review
section. But it is the aspect of the study (the argument or the sources) that is emphasized
that determines what type of document it is.

1. Your paper is supposed to be an interpretation of some aspect of the
work(s): in other words, an argument concerning some aspect of the work
based on analysis of relevant textual evidence. Your paper is not supposed
to be a summary of the work, a statement of your opinion about the work, or a
discussion of its historical significance or relevance. Frame your paper as an
investigation of why and how the author makes the argument he or she does
rather than simply saying what is said. Turn your topic into an argument.
2. Give a clear statement of your argument at the beginning of your paper.
3. Unify your paper with a single argument with a logical development from one step of
the argument to the next. Do not make your paper a collection of separate points or
examples.
4. Every time you state that the author states or argues something you should
have evidence to support your statement, either in the form of a quotation or a specific
textual reference. Only quote what you need for your purposes. Try to look at your
quotations as something more than mere evidence, and instead as material that you
can analyze (break down into its parts in order to interpret it) in order to make your
argument.
5. Use clear and simple language, but a formal style. Obscurity is not profundity. Make
sure that you know the meaning of the words you use. You are writing a formal paper,
not an email message. Avoid colloquial or chatty language. Do not use contractions:
not using them reminds you of the appropriate level of discourse for your paper.

What is a literature review?
A literature review is NOT a book review; it is a review of the literature. THE literature, in this
case, means all of the research you have collected. Your secondary sources only. The
scholarship.
So, why am I doing this?
Because good researchers—good writers—do it. You may be tempted to just jump directly from
gathering materials to writing an essay (or you may have been tempted to skip the research part
altogether); however, before you can write an essay, you need to identify a purpose for your
writing and develop a plan for using your sources. You need to synthesize; the lit review is that
synthesis. This is also an important step in proving your expertise before I allow you to edit and
annotate a fairy tale.
So, what am I looking for?
Basically, you are looking for patterns of association; you want to look at the body of scholarship
(the literature) you have collected and decide how it all works together. You need to see the
literature as a body of research rather than separate pieces. The scholarship is written by real
scholars who are familiar with one another’s work and sometimes know each other personally; it
is a kind of elaborate conversation. You are listening to that conversation, waiting for a good
opportunity to jump in.
So, I have six pieces of literature to review, right?
Well, you have AT LEAST six pieces. It will actually be easier to write a lit review of more
sources; eight or ten sources would be a good number. This does require more research and more
time for reading, but the payoff is greater expertise and more to discuss in the review.
Okay, so what do I do first?
First, make sure you have gathered the literature. For this assignment, I am only permitting you
to use the CSCC Library databases to gather your sources. Specifically, you will look at the
Academic Search Complete, MLA International Bibliography, and Literary Reference Center
databases; if these don’t turn up 6-10 good sources for you, then you can search other databases
(and I have posted a video showing you how to do this research, so make sure you watch it). You
are NOT permitted to locate web based sources, even via Google scholar. And I am asking you
not to use books, simply to save time.
And then?
Once you have all of the literature, you should read it and understand it. It isn’t absolutely
necessary to pore over each page of each source—this would likely be hundreds of pages of
difficult reading. Use your reading skills—the first two or three pages usually contain the thesis
and main arguments—the last couple of pages will often contain some kind of summary or
conclusion. Look for important headings in between. I strongly suggest highlighting the thesis
(probably more than a single sentence) and the main points (topic sentences) and any interesting
passages you may want to reference later.

In your essay, you must make reference to Singer’s paper “Famine, Affluence, and Morality” and the paper you read in producing the annotated bibliography in Assignment #17. Both papers must be listed in your bibliography. Other sources may also be referenced but this is not required, though all sources used must be listed in the bibliography. Your project must begin with a standard form representation of your argument followed by a diagram of the argument, using between 10-15 premises. Writing a Research Essay in International Relations and Political Science
This is some basic advice on writing an essay in International Relations. The advice is generic, and obviously particular assignments, topics, questions have their own requirements – but this general advice should apply most of the time.
Be aware of what a criteria grading sheet looks like, as this sets out the way in which the essay will be graded. The standard grading sheet looks like this, and you will notice that there are four separate criteria. We will deal with each in turn.
1. Structure/Organization: Have you answered the question? Do you have a clear argument that you defend throughout? Is it well organized with appropriate use of paragraphs?
2. Research: Are you demonstrating research skills? Have you used a range of sources? Is it thoroughly referenced, using an appropriate system, with a bibliography?
3. Content: Do you set out clear arguments/evidence to support your position? Have you considered counter-arguments/evidence? Is their evidence of critical thinking?
4. Presentation: Is the paper well-written? Is it proof-read for grammar and spelling errors?
1. Structure/Organisation
Essays need a clear and concise introduction, which sets out a position: the thesis or argument that the essay will defend. If a question has been set, the introduction needs to clearly answer this question. It does not provide a broad introduction to the topic (avoid waffle or ‘flowery’ introductions), but rather, specifies the particular position that the essay will pursue. The essay then defends this position clearly throughout! I strongly suggest beginning the essay with the line “This essay argues…”. If you can clearly set out your position at the start, it will solve a lot of the structural problems that many essays have. You can then use the rest of the introduction to expand on your argument, detail the case material you are using to support your position, explain how your position allows you to propose an answer to the question(if one is set), and outline the structure of the essay. When outlining the structure of the essay, using first, second, third can be a clear and informative approach for the reader.
The main body of the essay is organised in short, sharp, concise paragraphs. It is important to consistently link the material, ideas, theories, concepts, debates, arguments, evidence, and case studies that you evaluate in the main body of the essay back to the question, and to your argument. Though different courses and different types of written assignments have different objectives, normally it is a good idea to have a balance between theoretical/conceptual debates and discussion, and empirical evidence. Literature review

The review has an introduction outlining the topic and context, a body section examining past research and identifying gaps, and a conclusion summarizing key findings and conclusions. Proper literature reviews are carefully organized, critically analyze sources, and clearly demonstrate how the current research builds upon past work.

Step ONE: Identify the nature of the source material. Which readings are primary or secondary sources? Are they fictional works or do they present any evident bias?

If you choose a primary and a secondary source, then think about how the primary source fits into the narrative/position of the secondary source.
If you choose two primary sources, then compare how they represent different viewpoints or perspectives on important issues.
If there is only one assigned reading, then extract two meaningful examples instead of comparisons.
Step THREE: Draw TWO meaningful comparisons between the two documents that reveals important insight into the historical period/topic of the week. The comparison may be any similarity or difference, but should focus on explaining how it helps historians understand the past. Think about how and why things happened the way they did. Figure out what you think is the most significant SIMILARITY between the two passages.
Consider the author's perspective (national origin, class, ideology etc) for each document.
STEP FOUR: If these documents were the source material for your research project, what would your preliminary research question or thesis statement be? This should be no more than two sentences and cover the main idea that you would try to argue.
Ex. Using the works of Robespierre and St. Just, this paper will argue that the violence of the French Revolution was created by their interpretation of the needs of the French nation rather than their philosophical beliefs.
Be ambitious but with limits. Lay out a provable case that makes a strong a point, regardless of whether you are fully convinced that it is the case. You will be evaluated on the composition and effect of the ideas rather than the perfectness of the answer.
Step FIVE: Create one discussion question that you can propose to the class during seminar. It should be a ‘why’ problem that poses an issue for debate rather than demanding a specific factual answer. Ex. ‘Why didn’t Frankenstein name the Creature?” instead of “Did Frankenstein name the Creature?”
Do NOT use quotations or paraphrase the document. You may refer to specific passages but do not summarize the document. “ex. Where Thomas Paine talked about hereditary right, he was focused on the legitimacy of an absolute monarchy.” The paper should consist entirely of your own ideas and opinions about the sources using a compare/contrast approach. Therefore, citations should never be required. If you do quote/paraphrase then include citations.

What This Handout is About…
This handout will explain what a Literature Review is and offer insights into the form and
construction of a Literature Review in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences.
Introduction
OK. You’ve got to write a literature review. You dust off your world literature
anthology book, settle down in your Ebert and Roper at the Movies theatre chair with
your popcorn and soda in hand, and get ready to issue a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down”
as you leaf through the pages. “Literature Review” done. Right?
Wrong! The “literature” of a literature review refers to any collection of materials on a
topic, not necessarily the Great Literary Texts of the World. “Literature” could be
anything from a set of government pamphlets on British colonial methods in Africa to
scholarly articles on the treatment of a torn ACL. And a review does not necessarily
mean that your reader wants you to give your personal opinion on whether or not you
liked these sources.
What is a literature review, then?
A literature review discusses published information in a particular subject area, and
sometimes information in a particular subject area within a certain time period.
A literature review can be just a simple summary of the sources, but it usually has an
organizational pattern and combines both summary and synthesis. A summary is a recap
of the important information of the source, but a synthesis is a re-organization, or a
reshuffling, of that information. It might give a new interpretation of old material or
combine new with old interpretations. Or it might trace the intellectual progression of the
field, including major debates. And depending on the situation, the literature review may
evaluate the sources and advise the reader on the most pertinent or relevant.
But how is a literature review different from an academic research
paper?
While the main focus of an academic research paper is to support your own argument, the
focus of a literature review is to summarize and synthesize the arguments and ideas of
others. The academic research paper also covers a range of sources, but it is usually a
select number of sources, because the emphasis is on the argument. Likewise, a literature
review can also have an “argument,” but it is not as important as covering a number of
sources. In short, an academic research paper and a literature review contain some of the
same elements. In fact, many academic research papers will contain a literature review
section. But it is the aspect of the study (the argument or the sources) that is emphasized
that determines what type of document it is.

Guidelines for Papers
1. Your paper is supposed to be an interpretation of some aspect of the
work(s): in other words, an argument concerning some aspect of the work
based on analysis of relevant textual evidence. Your paper is not supposed
to be a summary of the work, a statement of your opinion about the work, or a
discussion of its historical significance or relevance. Frame your paper as an
investigation of why and how the author makes the argument he or she does
rather than simply saying what is said. Turn your topic into an argument.
2. Give a clear statement of your argument at the beginning of your paper.
3. Unify your paper with a single argument with a logical development from one step of
the argument to the next. Do not make your paper a collection of separate points or
examples.
4. Every time you state that the author states or argues something you should
have evidence to support your statement, either in the form of a quotation or a specific
textual reference. Only quote what you need for your purposes. Try to look at your
quotations as something more than mere evidence, and instead as material that you
can analyze (break down into its parts in order to interpret it) in order to make your
argument.
5. Use clear and simple language, but a formal style. Obscurity is not profundity. Make
sure that you know the meaning of the words you use. You are writing a formal paper,
not an email message. Avoid colloquial or chatty language. Do not use contractions:
not using them reminds you of the appropriate level of discourse for your paper.
Criteria for assessing your work:
1. Do you have a clear statement of your argument?
2. Do you provide relevant evidence?
3. Are your reasoning and writing clear and effective?
4. Do you demonstrate understanding of the work(s) you are analyzing?
5. To what degree do you address the most important questions and problems
posed by the work(s) you are interpreting?

What is a literature review?
A literature review is NOT a book review; it is a review of the literature. THE literature, in this
case, means all of the research you have collected. Your secondary sources only. The
scholarship.
So, why am I doing this?
Because good researchers—good writers—do it. You may be tempted to just jump directly from
gathering materials to writing an essay (or you may have been tempted to skip the research part
altogether); however, before you can write an essay, you need to identify a purpose for your
writing and develop a plan for using your sources. You need to synthesize; the lit review is that
synthesis. This is also an important step in proving your expertise before I allow you to edit and
annotate a fairy tale.
So, what am I looking for?
Basically, you are looking for patterns of association; you want to look at the body of scholarship
(the literature) you have collected and decide how it all works together. You need to see the
literature as a body of research rather than separate pieces. The scholarship is written by real
scholars who are familiar with one another’s work and sometimes know each other personally; it
is a kind of elaborate conversation. You are listening to that conversation, waiting for a good
opportunity to jump in.
So, I have six pieces of literature to review, right?
Well, you have AT LEAST six pieces. It will actually be easier to write a lit review of more
sources; eight or ten sources would be a good number. This does require more research and more
time for reading, but the payoff is greater expertise and more to discuss in the review.
Okay, so what do I do first?
First, make sure you have gathered the literature. For this assignment, I am only permitting you
to use the CSCC Library databases to gather your sources. Specifically, you will look at the
Academic Search Complete, MLA International Bibliography, and Literary Reference Center
databases; if these don’t turn up 6-10 good sources for you, then you can search other databases
(and I have posted a video showing you how to do this research, so make sure you watch it). You
are NOT permitted to locate web based sources, even via Google scholar. And I am asking you
not to use books, simply to save time.
And then?
Once you have all of the literature, you should read it and understand it. It isn’t absolutely
necessary to pore over each page of each source—this would likely be hundreds of pages of
difficult reading. Use your reading skills—the first two or three pages usually contain the thesis
and main arguments—the last couple of pages will often contain some kind of summary or
conclusion. Look for important headings in between. I strongly suggest highlighting the thesis
(probably more than a single sentence) and the main points (topic sentences) and any interesting
passages you may want to reference later.

In your essay, you must make reference to Singer’s paper “Famine, Affluence, and Morality” and the paper you read in producing the annotated bibliography in Assignment #17. Both papers must be listed in your bibliography. Other sources may also be referenced but this is not required, though all sources used must be listed in the bibliography. Your project must begin with a standard form representation of your argument followed by a diagram of the argument, using between 10-15 premises. Your argument must include at least one deductive inference and one inductive inference and these must be identified (by type) and indicated on your diagram (i.e. on the arrow connecting the premises note “disjunctive syllogism” or “analogy”).
Quotations should be referenced in the text as follows:

Based on the lecture on Chinese History and Marxist Historiography that we can observe that women’s values for love and marriage have changed dramatically. China entered different periods from the feudal system to the opening of China. Step THREE: Draw TWO meaningful comparisons between the two documents that reveals important insight into the historical period/topic of the week. The comparison may be any similarity or difference, but should focus on explaining how it helps historians understand the past. Think about how and why things happened the way they did. Figure out what you think is the most significant SIMILARITY between the two passages. Consider the author's perspective (national origin, class, ideology etc) for each document. STEP FOUR: If these documents were the source material for your research project, what would your preliminary research question or thesis statement be? This should be no more than two sentences and cover the main idea that you would try to argue. Ex. Using the works of Robespierre and St. Just, this paper will argue that the violence of the French Revolution was created by their interpretation of the needs of the French nation rather than their philosophical beliefs.
- 3. Be ambitious but with limits. Lay out a provable case that makes a strong a point, regardless of whether you are fully convinced that it is the case. You will be evaluated on the composition and effect of the ideas rather than the perfectness of the answer. Step FIVE: Create one discussion question that you can propose to the class during seminar. It should be a ‘why’ problem that poses an issue for debate rather than demanding a specific factual answer. Ex. ‘Why didn’t Frankenstein name the Creature?” instead of “Did Frankenstein name the Creature?” Do NOT use quotations or paraphrase the document. You may refer to specific passages but do not summarize the document. “ex. Where Thomas Paine talked about hereditary right, he was focused on the legitimacy of an absolute monarchy.” The paper should consist entirely of your own ideas and opinions about the sources using a compare/contrast approach.
