UXPA 2021: Putting words in the mouths of chatbots: Designing cognitive intentsUXPA International
Presented by Jon Temple and Dabby Phipps. Chatbots have emerged as a powerful new technology in our daily lives. Sometimes they attempt to answer our questions or provide advice, while other times they ask screening questions before handing off to another human. Despite their ubiquity, the capabilities of chatbots are often misunderstood with many people believing the chatbot can generate unique answers or solve problems on its own. In reality, the answers chatbots provide are only as good as the human thought and writing that goes into creating the cognitive intents, which form the corpus of a chatbot’s knowledge base. In the following, we will describe the complex process of authoring cognitive intents, such as: what is an intent; how to select intents based on user feedback and metrics; how to improve confidence matching; and how UX research can iteratively improve intent performance. These concepts will be tied together in a chatbot demonstration.
Beginner's guide for understanding what is a chatbot, rule based chatbots vs AI based chatbots, how does it work and how you can create your own chatbot.
So You Say You Want a Chatbot RevolutionHolly Cummins
Not so long ago, we interacted with websites by clicking buttons, and with people by talking to them. Those lines, however, are becoming increasingly blurred, with real people guiding our website interactions and computers running phone, Twitter, and Facebook Messenger interactions. An increasing number of these interactions are voice, rather than text, ones. What does it all mean? Are websites obsolete, or is this a passing fad? Is chatbottery the new HMTL, only without the standardization? This session presents a practical introduction to how chatbots work, their advantages, their limitations, and where they should and should not be used.

A study states that people are now spending more time in messaging apps than social networking applications. Messaging apps are in trend and chatbots are the future. Learn everything about the chatbots from history to types to working, right here.
Small talks are phrases that express a feeling of relationship building. We use them to respond to casual conversations. It allows people conversing in social situations to get to know each other on more informal topics.
Small talk can significantly improve the end-user experience by answering common questions outside the scope of your chatbot.
Types of small talk
It would help if you had a well-curated small talk dataset to enable the chatbot to kick off great conversations. It’ll also maintain user interest and builds a relationship with the company/product.
Here’s a list of chatbot small talk phrases to use on your chatbots, based on the most frequent messages we’ve seen in our bots.
In this Slide, we will help you to understand the chatbot dataset and how you can add different types of small talks to your chatbot.
The chat bots which are Artificial Intelligent and are fully functional on how they learn and what they learn with respect to the inputs, how they find patterns and respond accordingly.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
2. What is a chatbot?
• A computer program that can talk to humans in
natural language!
• Can replace a human for monotonous jobs of
answering queries, e.g. E-help desk.
3. Need for chatbots?
•Widespread use of personal machines
•Better Human Computer Interaction
•“To express their interest, wishes, or queries
directly and naturally, by speaking, typing, and
pointing”.
4. Railway Chatbot Conversation
• You: Hello
• Op: Hi. This is Railway Enquiry
• You: What is the status of train 2803?
• Op: It’s right on time. The train will leave IST at
5:45 pm. Is there anything else I could assist you
with?
• You : No, thank you
• Op: You are welcome. Indian railways wishes a nice
and happy journey.
5. How does it respond
Looks for certain patterns of words in the user's input.
Replies with pre-determined output, if the pattern is
matched.
Needs to have an idea of what the user will chat
Has suitable responses defined in the Code file file
6. ELIZA
• One of the first chatbot designed in 1966
• Works by simple parsing and substitution of key
words into canned phrases
• People get emotionally caught up by ELIZA’s
confident replies forgetting that it’s a machine
7. Example of Conversation
Eliza’s conversation with a patient is:-
– Human: Well, my boyfriend made me come here.
o ELIZA: Your boyfriend made you come here?
o Human: He says I'm depressed much of the time.
o ELIZA: I am sorry to hear you are depressed.
o Human: It's true. I'm unhappy.
o ELIZA: Do you think coming here will help you not to be
unhappy?
8. Types of ChatBot
• Simple ChatBot – Only works with pre-written
statements.
• Smart ChaBot - it rely on AI.
- Instead of pre prepared answers,
the bot responds with suggestions on the topic. All the
words said by customer are recorded for later
processing.
