What is a chatbot?
• A computer program that can talk to humans in
natural language!
• Can replace a human for monotonous jobs of
answering queries, e.g. E-help desk.
Need for chatbots?
•Widespread use of personal machines
•Better Human Computer Interaction
•“To express their interest, wishes, or queries
directly and naturally, by speaking, typing, and
pointing”.
Railway Chatbot Conversation
• You: Hello
• Op: Hi. This is Railway Enquiry
• You: What is the status of train 2803?
• Op: It’s right on time. The train will leave IST at
5:45 pm. Is there anything else I could assist you
with?
• You : No, thank you
• Op: You are welcome. Indian railways wishes a nice
and happy journey.
How does it respond
 Looks for certain patterns of words in the user's input.
 Replies with pre-determined output, if the pattern is
matched.
 Needs to have an idea of what the user will chat
 Has suitable responses defined in the Code file file
ELIZA
• One of the first chatbot designed in 1966
• Works by simple parsing and substitution of key
words into canned phrases
• People get emotionally caught up by ELIZA’s
confident replies forgetting that it’s a machine
Example of Conversation
Eliza’s conversation with a patient is:-
– Human: Well, my boyfriend made me come here.
o ELIZA: Your boyfriend made you come here?
o Human: He says I'm depressed much of the time.
o ELIZA: I am sorry to hear you are depressed.
o Human: It's true. I'm unhappy.
o ELIZA: Do you think coming here will help you not to be
unhappy?
Types of ChatBot
• Simple ChatBot – Only works with pre-written
statements.
• Smart ChaBot - it rely on AI.
- Instead of pre prepared answers,
the bot responds with suggestions on the topic. All the
words said by customer are recorded for later
processing.
