Mother Duck laid three eggs in a nest. A fox tried to steal the eggs but Mother Duck led it away. The eggs hatched into three ducklings who wandered off in search of their mother. The first duckling found Mother Duck, who named him Tony. The second duckling mistakenly thought a cat was its mother. The third duckling was not very smart and thought a potato was its mother because he was hungry. Mother Duck and Tony eventually found the other two ducklings and brought them home.

3. One day Mother Duck sat down in her nest and laid
three blue eggs. She sat down on the eggs to keep
them warm.

4. About two weeks later a sly fox sneaked up to the
nest tried to steal and then eat the eggs! Mother
Duck quacked and quacked in alarm and led the
fox away from the nest.

5. A little crack appeared on one of the eggs. A tiny
duckling popped out! He wandered of wondering
“Where’s Mommy?”

6. A second duckling popped out soon after. He
was also looking for his Mommy!

7. The third duckling
came out of his egg
last. He was hungry
and the thought of
Mommy never
crossed his mind!

8. The first duckling
came across his
Mommy.
His Mommy
decided to call him
Tony.

9. The second duckling
found a cat. He began
to think that he had
found his Mommy!

10. The third duckling
who was not very
smart and found a
potato. He began
to think he had
found his Mommy
too, but he was
still hungry!

11. Mommy and Tony
were walking
along when they
met a pig. He
hadn’t seen
Tommy or the not-
so- smart duckling.
They had to keep
going as neither
duckling was there.

12. Next Mommy and Tony
also came across a cat.
They went to take a
look... and Tommy was
behind the cat! Tommy
did not want to leave.
He wanted to stay with
his new Mommy.

13. Mommy and Tony came to a halt at a half eaten
potato and a guilty looking duckling! He was
Tony’s other brother. He wanted to stay with the
potato!

14. After the big walk
home to the farm they
were both born on,
Tony and his Mommy
went over to their nest
and slept the night
away!

15. Strange but True
• When ducklings
hatch out of their
eggs the first thing
they see, they think
is their Mommy. This
cat in County Carlow
adopted some
ducklings who
thought she was
their Mommy.
