Panchatantra: The Fox
and the Cream Biscuit
Once upon a time, there was a very clever fox
who lived in the forest. One day, the fox was
hungry. He really wanted to eat something
sweet, like a biscuit. Just then, he saw a crow
sitting on a branch. The crow had a cream
biscuit in his beak which he had snatched
away from a little boy. The fox’s mouth started
watering on seeing the biscuit. He started
thinking of a way of getting the biscuit for
himself.
The fox said to the crow, “Dear crow, the lion
king told me that you sing beautifully. But I
have never heard your voice. Will you sing a
song for me?” The crow was so pleased on
hearing the fox’s flattering words that he
immediately opened his beak and began,
“Caw, caw, caw.” As soon as the crow opened
his beak, the cream biscuit fell down. The
cunning fox immediately munched it up and
went off.
The next day, the fox came across the crow
again. This time, the crow had a piece of cake
in his mouth. The fox also wanted that cake.
He said, “Dear crow, please forgive me about
yesterday. Your song was so sweet and I really
wanted to hear the whole song but I spotted a
rabbit nearby so I ran away. Please sing that
song for me again.” But the crow had
understood the fox’s trick. He flew off towards
his nest with the piece of cake in his beak.
After keeping the cake safely in his nest, he
returned to where he was sitting and began
singing loudly, “Caw, caw, caw.”The fox could
not bear to listen to the crow’s voice and ran
away. This story tells us that we cannot fool
someone every time.
3. FIND The HIDDEN Objects
A kitten went a-walking
One morning in July,
And idly fell a-talking
With a great big butterfly.
The kitten’s tone was airy,
The butterfly would scoff;
When there came along a fairy
Who whisked his wings right off.
And then - for it is written
Fairies can do such things,
Upon the startled kitten
She stuck the yellow wings.
The kitten felt a quiver,
She rose into the air,
Then flew down to the river
To view her image there.

Discoveries and Inventions
Allergies are one of the most common diseases experienced by people. It is a chronic disease – it lasts a
long time or happens very often. An allergic reaction occurs when the body overreacts to a foreign
substance which it deems harmful. These substances, which cause allergic reactions, are called‘allergens’.
The body’s reaction to allergens is to produce an antibody called ‘immunoglobulin E’. The symptoms
which come about as a result of the reaction between allergens and IgE are called an allergic reaction.
The human body can react to a variety of allergens and symptoms of an allergic reaction include asthma,
rashes, hives, swollen lips, amongst others.
The first mention of allergies came in the writings of the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates. He wrote
of the negative effects which certain foods have on people. Though he did not coin the term‘allergy’, he
was the first person to recognize the fundamentals of food allergies. The word ‘allergy’ was coined by
Viennese doctor Clemens von Pirquet in 1906. This came about after he noticed that some of his patients
had hypersensitive reactions to certain foods and pollen – which would otherwise be seen as harmless.
Another breakthrough was the discovery of the antibody ‘immunoglobulin’ in 1966-67 by Dr. Kimishige
Ishizaka in Denver, Colorado and Gunnar Johansson and Hans Bennich in Uppsala, Sweden.

6. Look at a group of crows and try to tell which one is which. It
is difficult, right? But these birds will remember your face as
that human who stared at us! Crows can recognize and
remember human faces. Crows remember who threw bread
pieces at them and who threw stones. They might even
become vengeful to the one who wasn’t good to them. Ever
seen a group of crows cawing with each other? It is noise for
you but they are communicating in an advance manner. An
experiment conducted by researchers proved that crows can
tell one another about details, dangers and also describe
people. Crows can plan! They plan as to how and when to
catch their prey and hide it. Crows pay attention to human
behaviour and most of the time, use it to their advantage.
They are known to use tools. For example, they can drop a
walnut in front of a car tyre to break it. Crows also memorize
the pattern of garbage trucks to get easy access to the dirt
and food.

Box
a comic story
sir dig-a-lot
“Today someone stole my favorite pencil box. It also had my lunch money in
it. I couldn’t tell mom and dad because they would feel very bad and might
think I lost it” Rohan was upset and complained to his friend.
Rohan gave a puzzled look to his friend to which Sir Dig a Lot said “Let me
tell you a Greek mythical story. Long time ago, Zeus the Greek God ordered
Hephaestus to make him a beautiful daughter from clay. Hephaestus
reated a beautiful girl called Pandora."
9. When she grew older Zeus sent Pandora to earth to marry a simple man,
Epimetheus. Now Zeus was mad at Prometheus who was Epimetheus’s
brother. To punish Prometheus, Zeus locked all the evil and diseases in a box
and gave it to Pandora.
He gave the key to Epimetheus and made him promise that it would never be
opened. Zeus thought that Epimetheus’s curiosity would get the better of
him and either he or his brother will open the box.
Pandora was a curious girl. She begged Epimetheus to give her the key so
she could open the box. However Epimetheus knew better and tried to
convince Pandora to obey her father’s order.
10. When Epimetheus was sleeping,
Pandora stole the key and opened the box.
Out flew all the evil, jealousy, envy, deceit out of the box. Before Pandora
realized what she had done it was too late and the world got all the bad
things.
When Epimetheus woke up he found Pandora sobbing. She told him what
had happened. It is believed that Pandora unleashed all the evil things in
the world because of her curiosity.”

Rohan said, “If she hadn’t opened the box, I would still have my pencil box with
me.” Sir Dig a Lot laughed and said “She opened the box again to show her
husband what had happened and out flew a small angel. Before she could shut
the box it came to them and said, "I am hope." So if we have evil things "So if
we have evil things, we also have hope Rohan. With that hope tell your parents
the truth, they will believe you.”
Rohan smiled and thanked his friend for the story.
12. One afternoon, two crows named Oggy and Lou, were learning to fly. Their
wings had finally become strong enough and covered with enough feathers
for them to take flight. They were the best of friends, having grown up in nests
which were side by side. Their mothers watched anxiously as their sons
flapped their wings and prepared to leap off the branch. Oggy was more ad-
venturous than Lou and was itching to get out and see the world. They both
stepped off the branch and began furiously flapping their wings! Suddenly,
they were airborne and flying high above the tree!
