STUDENT DESIGN PORTFOLIO
Charles Martin
(TEASER EDITION)
To me design has always been less about making a thing and more about
solving a problem. To that end it’s imperative that every part of the
design process shares a common intent.A design solution isn’t a viable
one if the means to create it also happen to create more problems. It’s
important for any designer to recognize that it comes with this inherent
responsibility.

-EngageTask Chair: Senior capstone project.
-TallTrees: Brand development exercise.
-Blackbird Cutlery: Ergonomics in kitchen ware.
-Cat Wall: Modular system design/IHA entry
-The Panoptic: User interface focused watch design.
Engage Desk Chair
Engage Task Chair
The human body wasn’t designed to fit into the common desk chair. The spine is not
a load bearing structure, and the ninety degree angle present in the common desk chair puts
all the weight of your back right on top of it. By performing an in depth investigation into desk
work culture, human physiology, and furniture design, I have set out to redesign the system upon
which we sit. Currently, there is no “healthy” seated posture, my goal is not only to create it, but
to capture it in a design so simple that this solution can be put into effect as easily as possible.
Engage Task Chair
The Engage chair works with the body’s
natural pressure distribution systems to
create a more healthy sitting experience.
Merchandise
TallTree is a brand identity I developed under
which I sell a line of products that I enjoy working
on in my spare time.AllTallTree merchandise is
hand made with natural, found materials.
brand Identity
BlackBird Cutlery
BlackBird Cutlery
The goal of the blackbird cutlery project was to practice designing the
human interaction element of a product. By researching material and
testing ergonomics, I arrived at these comfortable and efficient forms.
Ergonomics study
The key feature of these designs is the ergonomic bend in the handle.
Each handle is contoured specifically to fit the curvature of the hand.

The Panoptic
Concept refinement
The guiding principal of the body design was to celebrate the intricacy of the
wrist watch, but at the same time keeping from unnecessary embellishments
so as not to distract from the face.To that end, the body mostly follows form
and funciton ideals, with the exception of a small extrusion on either side,
featuring a glass window that can shed light into the inner workings of the
watch.
