1. A certification program for wig
companies that provide low-
cost or no-cost hairpieces to
patients in need.
2. Cancer patients undergoing
chemotherapy suffer from hair loss, in
addition to many other debilitating
symptoms.
Men and women suffering from alopecia
lose hair on some or all of their scalp.
3. It is not uncommon for patients suffering
from hair loss to suffer from social phobia,
anxiety, and depression.
One way to help alleviate the emotional
stress that patients experience is to
provide them with attractive wigs and
hair pieces that allow them to live with
dignity and confidence.
4. Existing charities sell donated hair and
use the money to purchase wigs for
patients.
Existing charities focus on particular types
of hair loss.
Our certification program would reduce
such inefficiency and confusion.
5. Like Fair Trade Certification and Organic
Certification, the Charitable Tresses
Certification program would be an
independent certification agency.
Charitable Tresses would provide
certification for existing wig companies
that comply with our standards.
6. To receive Charitable Tresses
Certification, a company must agree to
donate human hair wigs to individuals
demonstrating both a medical and
financial need.
The number and cost of the wigs
donated must be equal to 3% of the
company’s net profit.
7. Men suffering from hair loss will be
eligible to receive hairpieces.
Need will be determined both by the
patient’s income and the financial
burden of medical costs.
Patients who demonstrate need will be
eligible to purchase a wig or hairpiece of
their choice directly from the company,
at little or no cost.
8. The company seeking certification will
be required to determine the need of
the patients themselves, based on the
standards set by Charitable Tresses.
The company will use a sliding scale, so
that those most in need will receive
hairpieces at no cost, while those of
better means will receive hairpieces at
reduced cost.
9. Patients must be able to choose the
hairpiece themselves, within the price
limit set by the company.
The company can set the price limit
themselves, but they are encouraged to
keep the prices reasonable (up to $750,
for example) so that more patients can
receive quality wigs.
10. Charitable Tresses Certification is a way
for an already existing wig company to
demonstrate their concern for those in
need.
Conscientious customers are more likely
to purchase wigs from a company that
cares about those in need and puts their
money to good use.
Charitable donations are eligible for tax
deductions.
11. Charitable Tresses will maintain a website
with a complete list of all participating
companies.
Companies will also be provided with a
certification logo that they can place on
the packaging of their products and
advertisements.
