Characteristics of Good HR Manager
1) Human Behaviour Expert and Analyzer
If he or she isnot able to understand Human behaviour ,he will not be able to hire ,retain and manage
good talent.
2) Business Knowledge
If the persondonot have zeal and interestinBusinessandoperationsof the company,he or she will not
be able understand the revenue -PROFIT EQUATION..It is very important to know the business of the
company ,best HR practices in the industry to attract and hire best talent from the market..
3) Experts in Numbers,Statistics and Taxation
If HR managerdo nothave this skill ,he will not be able to frame effective Compensation and benefits
metrics.He or She will notbe able to analyze resultsof survey.He will notbe able toBenchmark.He will
not be able to give competitive edge to his company.
4) One shouldhave verygoodunderstandingof humanbehaviourandpsychologywhichenable him to
feel the pulse of eachindividual aroundhim,whichwillprovide him extra space to plan strategy for
the issues which can arise in future.
5) Management (Manage-men-tactfully )
He shouldbe tactful to how to deal and react in various situations which can arise all of a sudden in an
organization where your role and involvement is very imperative.
6) He should be always a student .There is always space for improvement so we cannot say we are
perfect,todojustice to our job, our field we should always strive to learn new and newer theories
and concepts and this will lead us to fantastic innovations.

WHY EMPHATIC ?
As the world moves fast and there is seldom time for understanding or putting yourself in the other
person'sshoes,itisthe HR Professional whoshouldco-relate withthe emotionsof anemployee atwork
.This ensures that we keep the employee engaged and involved.
WHY A GOOD LISTENER ?
Everything at a workplace starts from being a good listener. When a boss doesn't understand you or
when you are ignored ,it is a good HR manager who needs to understand the pulse of the employee
beforehand as this is first important move of being proactive.
WHY EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE ?
When a HR person has been emphatic and he has listened to an employee ,he/she has to effectively
bridge the gap between the employee and his /her manager for which effective communication is
necessary.Aswe all agree that the firstsmall gapof misunderstandingormiscommunicationbetweena
boss and a subordinate are the first signs of an employee dissatisfaction.
The above is at a micro level where HRManager wouldstartwithand hasto be strong.The macro levels
of qualities then build up..
16) Goal setting
Goal settingability/skill of amanager is very crucial as in a survey by Training journal ...80 % of workers
said that they worked for bad managers and 87% felt that their managers had failed to set out their
plans clearly..
Leaderswhohave a clear targetof whatto achieve ,withthe assistance of followers,andwhoconstantly
articulate the goalsto followersempower their group to accomplish more than what one person could
when acting alone.
17) Leadership Style
Knowing which leadership style fits with each member's style helps the young manager to influence
others, resolve conflict and get the job done. So its essential to identify the required leadership style
that regards to the employees as it helps in achieving maximum efficiency out of the employees..
18) Decision Making
A newmanagerissuddenlyexpectedtomake a transitionfromfollowing to directing ,as his team looks
on himto make the rightand timelydecisions..Procrastinationandbaddecisionsfromthe manager can
adverselyaffectthe organization'sgrowth and can also lead t the manager losing credibility within his
team.
Hence decisionmakingabilitiesof managershouldbe apttomake the right decisions at the right time..
