2. OBJECTIVES
• Be able to discuss what “air
pollution” is all about.
• Be able to determine the cause and
effect of polluted air.
• Be able to understand the importance
of fresh air on species.
3. THE AIR
- is the ocean we breathe.
- supplies us with oxygen which is essential for our
bodies to live.
- is 99.9% nitrogen, oxygen, water vapor and inert
gases.
human activities can release into the air, some of
which can cause problems for humans, plants, and
animals.
4. The Top 10 Most Air Polluted Cities
in the World
10. Kanpur, India
Population: 3,221,435
major leather industry
illegal glue factories
levels of respiratory
diseases, asthma and
eye irritation among
the city’s population
are increasing.
9. Yasuj, Iran
Population: 96,786
manufacturing plants
The city has plans to open a
refinery by 2014 that will
produce
gasoline, kerosene, gas
oil, furnace oil, liquefied
gas, asphalt and sulfur.
5. 8. Gaborone, Botswana
Population: 191,776
caused by landfills where
garbage is burned and by
people who burn wood and
even animal waste for
cooking and heating.
worst in winter because of
side effects of heating.
7. Peshawar, Pakistan
Population: 3,625,000
vehicles have “catalytic
converters”
suffers greatly from its
vehicle use.
Burning of municipal solid
wastes.
6. 6. Kermanshah, Iran
Population: 822,921
dust problem
The dust has caused a
number of people to be
taken to hospitals for
respiratory and heart
problems.
5. Quetta, Pakistan
Population: 896,090
construction activities and
smoke emission from motor
vehicles and industrial units.
Iron mills, municipal wastes
and the use of insecticides.
7. 4. Ludhiana, India
Population: 1, 740, 247
Is a highly industrial city
made Ludhiana one of the
most polluted cities in the
world.
200 premature deaths each
year.
incidence of asthma is on
the rise.
3. Sanandaj, Iran
Population: 311,446
crippling dust storms
annual large particle
concentration is more than
12 times.
8. 2. Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Population: 2,754,685
visibly worse in the
wintertime.
Emissions from motor
vehicles, industries, and power
stations as well as road dust
and household garbage
burning are increasing.
1. Ahvaz, Iran
Population: 1,338,126
Major
industry, transportation, and
oil refineries bring this city
to the number 1 spot on the
list.
These particles can cause
asthma, heart disease and
lung cancer.
10. • One of the main cause of air pollution in the
air is the burning of fossil fuels, especially
coal.
• Power plant and vehicles consumes large
amounts of fossil fuels releasing large amount
of smokes and fumes into the atmosphere.
Among this fumes is sulfur dioxide.
• When sulfur dioxide mixed with oxygen in the
air and with water, it creates sulfur acid.
• When droplets of sulfuric acid gets heavy,
they fall as acid rain which can kill fishes,
crops and plants, destroy bodies of water such
as rivers and lakes, and infrastructure.
12. • Aside from acid rain, exhaust fumes
creates Smog (combination of smoke and
fog). This is caused by trapped exhaust
fumes in the upper layer in the
atmosphere which prevents the normal
circulation of air.
13. • Motor vehicles gives off carbon dioxide
which helps turn the atmosphere into a
kind of green house.
• Greenhouse effect happens when the
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere traps
heat. As carbon dioxide builds up, more
heat is trapped, causing the atmosphere to
warm up causing global warming.
14. • Global warming creates climate change,
affects farming and may cause the ice in
the polar region to melt and cause flood.
• CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons which
contains chlorine, carbon, hydrogen, and
fluorine creates holes in the ozone layer
which are called “ozone holes”
• CFCs come from aerosol sprays,
refrigerator, and from the manufacture of
plastic foams.
16. • The major sources of air pollution vary
from city to city. Automobiles produce
nearly in Los Angeles. Furnaces in
apartment and office building cause most
of the contamination in New York city.
Chicago’s air pollution comes equally
from industry, motor vehicles and heating
plants.
17. Reasons of Polluted Air
• Fuel combustion
• Industrial processes
• Burning of solid waste
• Other sources
18. Actions Taken to Save the Earth
• Clean Air Act
• Sin Tax Bill
• Using Of Solar Panel Vehicle
• Tree And Plant Planting
• Using Biofuel
• Using Of Mask, Handkerchief Etc.
19. IMPORTANCE OF FRESH AIR ON
US
• Fresh air is good for digestion.
--Fresh air helps you to digest food more effectively. That is why it’s great to take a
small walk outside after you eat. From all the health benefits of fresh air, this one is
really important if you are trying to lose weight.
• Improves your blood pressure and heart rate.
--If you have a problem with blood pressure, you should avoid polluted
environments and try to stay in surroundings that have a good supply of fresh air.
Dirty environment forces the body to work harder, to get the amount of oxygen it
needs.
• Fresh air makes you happier.
--The amount of serotonin is affected by the amount of oxygen you inhale.
Serotonin can significantly lighten your mood and promote a sense of happiness
and well-being. Fresh air will leave you feeling more refreshed and relaxed.
20. • Strengthens your immune system.
--White blood cells kill and fight bacteria and germs. They
need enough oxygen to work and function properly.
• Fresh air cleans your lungs.
--Fresh air helps the airways of your lungs to dilate more fully and
improves the cleansing action of your lungs. When you exhale and
breathe out through your lungs, you release airborne toxins from
your body.
• You will have more energy and sharper mind.
--Fresh air helps you to think better and increases your energy level.
Your brain needs twenty percent of your body’s oxygen. More
oxygen brings greater clarity to the brain, improves your
concentration, helps you to think more clearly and has a positive
effect on your energy level.
21. RECOMMENDATION
• Join in any environmental groups (Clean & Green
Project).
• Overall ban for illegal human activities.
• Each of us should clearly understood the importance
of fresh air on us (human, animals, plants, trees, flowers
etc.) and in order to save the earth.
• Reduced the use of things that might affect our
environment.
