CAREERS IN SCIENCE Chapter 1, Section 4
Branches of Science The three main branches of science are Earth & Space Science Physical Science Life Science
EARTH & SPACE SCIENCE The study of Earth and it’s place in the universe Forces that have shaped Earth throughout history Earth’s ocean & weather Planets and stars beyond earth
PHYSICAL SCIENCE Includes the study of Energy Motion Sound Light Electricity Magnetism Chemistry
LIFE SCIENCE The study of living things including plants, animals and microscopic life forms
Separate, but Together Although it is convenient to think of science as divided into three branches, they are NOT really separate Most scientific questions span the different fields of science
Science in Nonscience careers CHEF Chemistry Living organisms (Yeast) Preventing food from spoiling
Science in Nonscience careers ARTIST Must know about the properties of the materials they use Physics of heating and cooling Properties of paints, paper, etc.
Science in Nonscience careers SOUND TECHNICIAN Must understand how sound waves travel and interact with different materials Must understand electronic equipment
Science in Nonscience careers FIREFIGHTER Chemistry of different fires Rescue techniques
