 From Greek word ‘‘philosophia = φιλοσοφία’’ , mean
‘‘love of wisdom’’
 Philosophy is the study of the fundamental nature of
knowledge, reality and existence, especially when
considered as an academic discipline
 Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental
questions such as those about existence, reason,
knowledge, values, mind and language
 Is the systematic and critical study of fundamental
questions that arise both in everyday life

Philosophy has not paid sufficient attention to engineering
but philosophy has three major importance
1) Philosophy is necessary so that engineers may
understand and defend themselves against

engineers deal with professional ethical problems
3) Because of the inherently philosophical character of
engineering, philosophy may actually function as a
means to greater engineering self-understanding

What is Engineering and What is Engineering Knowledge?
 Philosophers have long discussed whether we should take
scientific theories to be aiming at literal, descriptive truth about
the world or whether they should be considered merely as
instruments for making accurate predictions.
 At first sight, engineers may have no interest in the potential
truth of theories, since they use them purely as a means to their
own practical ends.
