• Intellectual / practical activity encompassing - systematic study of structure
and behavior of physical and natural world -through observation and
experiment.
• Study of nature and its properties.
• Science - Latin word scientia, meaning "knowledge“
• Quest for knowledge, not the knowledge itself.
• Systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of
testable explanations and predictions about the universe.
• Earliest roots of science can be traced to Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia in
around 3500 to 3000 BCE.
• According to Fitzpatrick: Science- cumulative endless series of empirical
observations which result in the formation of concepts & theories, with both
concepts & theories being subject to modification in the light of further
empirical observations.
• Science is both a body of knowledge & the process of acquiring it.
• Science can be divided into different branches based on the subject of study.
• The physical sciences study the inorganic world and comprise the fields
of astronomy, physics, chemistry, and the Earth sciences.
• The biological sciences such as biology and medicine study the organic world of life and its
processes.
• Social sciences like anthropology and economics study the social and cultural aspects of human
behaviour.
• Science - rigorous, systematic endeavor that builds and organizes knowledge in the form
of testable explanations and predictions about the world.
• Modern science- typically divided into three major branches:
• Natural sciences (e.g., physics, chemistry, and biology), which study the physical world
• Social sciences (e.g., economics, psychology, and sociology), which study individuals and societies
• Formal sciences (e.g., logic, mathematics, and theoretical computer science), which study formal
systems, governed by axioms and rules.
• There is disagreement whether the formal sciences are science disciplines, as they do not rely
on empirical evidence.
• Applied sciences are disciplines that use scientific knowledge for practical purposes, such as in
engineering and medicine.

• Science as a body of knowledge – science has been characterized as a body of knowledge
obtained by scientists. Various types of scientific knowledge exist in the form of facts, concepts,
principles, laws, hypothesis & theories.
Three fold nature of science
-Is body of knowledge
-Is method of inquiry, a way of investigating
-Is an attitude towards life: a way of thinking.
Process/Product
Science is a process because the scientific method makes ANY hypothesis (or theory)
open to be
proven against.
During the process, the accurate ideas stay (as theories) while the false ideas disappear
from mainstream science as historic steps towards the truth.
- Science as a process – In science, the ways of gathering information, thinking,
measuring, problem solving are called process of science. Basic processes of science are
observation, comparison, classification, communication, measurement, estimation &
prediction. The quality of knowledge acquired in science depends on the quality of
process skills applied. The various processes of science can be classified into five
categories:
· Collection of data
· Analysis of data
· Synthesis of data
· Evaluation of data
Science is a product because without those historic steps, a YET MORE COMPLEX IDEA
couldnt have
appear.
Example: without Newton's laws of motion, Einstein would have nothing to build upon. In
other words he didnt come up with that equation out of nowhere, neither he made up the
word
relativity, he destroyed false ideas (newton's ideas) during the process, but he built a new
idea with a more accurate description of nature, leaving the theory of relativity as a
Product.
Science as a product – Whatever information or ideas we acquire through various processes
of science form the product of science. The basic components of the product of science are
facts, concepts, principles, theories & laws.
Science as both a process and a product – Science is both a body of knowledge & the
process of acquiring it. Science is both a verb & a noun. These two aspects are
interdependent & inseparable.
Nature
• Science is a particular way of looking at nature
• Science is a rapidly expanding body of knowledge
• Science is an interdisciplinary area of learning
• Science is a truly international enterprise
• Science is always tentative
• Science demands perseverance from its practitioners
• Science as an approach to investigation and as a process of constructing
knowledge
• Science stresses the values of open-mindedness, intellectual, honesty,
creative, thinking and dedication.
• Provides the essential background of knowledge for cultural development.
• Helps in training the children for developing a scientific temper and scientific
creativity.
• Adopts the scientific method which is known as reliable, valid, objective,

• Make students creative, open-minded
• Make aware of those aspects of science that are environmentally based and a life centred
• Train students in the maintenance and use of science equipment or apparatus
• Emphasize the scientific method which has helped in solving problems
• Develop the power of thinking, reasoning, curiosity and scientific attitude.

• Responsible steward of nature, environmentalist

  • 2. • Intellectual / practical activity encompassing - systematic study of structure and behavior of physical and natural world -through observation and experiment. • Study of nature and its properties. • Science - Latin word scientia, meaning "knowledge“ • Quest for knowledge, not the knowledge itself. • Systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe. • Earliest roots of science can be traced to Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia in around 3500 to 3000 BCE. • According to Fitzpatrick: Science- cumulative endless series of empirical observations which result in the formation of concepts & theories, with both concepts & theories being subject to modification in the light of further empirical observations. • Science is both a body of knowledge & the process of acquiring it.
  • 3. • Science can be divided into different branches based on the subject of study. • The physical sciences study the inorganic world and comprise the fields of astronomy, physics, chemistry, and the Earth sciences. • The biological sciences such as biology and medicine study the organic world of life and its processes. • Social sciences like anthropology and economics study the social and cultural aspects of human behaviour.
  • 4. • Science - rigorous, systematic endeavor that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the world. • Modern science- typically divided into three major branches: • Natural sciences (e.g., physics, chemistry, and biology), which study the physical world • Social sciences (e.g., economics, psychology, and sociology), which study individuals and societies • Formal sciences (e.g., logic, mathematics, and theoretical computer science), which study formal systems, governed by axioms and rules. • There is disagreement whether the formal sciences are science disciplines, as they do not rely on empirical evidence. • Applied sciences are disciplines that use scientific knowledge for practical purposes, such as in engineering and medicine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science#References (retrieved – 18.4.2024) • Science as a body of knowledge – science has been characterized as a body of knowledge obtained by scientists. Various types of scientific knowledge exist in the form of facts, concepts, principles, laws, hypothesis & theories.
  • 5. Three fold nature of science -Is body of knowledge -Is method of inquiry, a way of investigating -Is an attitude towards life: a way of thinking.
  • 6. Process/Product Science is a process because the scientific method makes ANY hypothesis (or theory) open to be proven against. During the process, the accurate ideas stay (as theories) while the false ideas disappear from mainstream science as historic steps towards the truth. - Science as a process – In science, the ways of gathering information, thinking, measuring, problem solving are called process of science. Basic processes of science are observation, comparison, classification, communication, measurement, estimation & prediction. The quality of knowledge acquired in science depends on the quality of process skills applied. The various processes of science can be classified into five categories: · Collection of data · Analysis of data · Synthesis of data · Evaluation of data
  • 7. Science is a product because without those historic steps, a YET MORE COMPLEX IDEA couldnt have appear. Example: without Newton's laws of motion, Einstein would have nothing to build upon. In other words he didnt come up with that equation out of nowhere, neither he made up the word relativity, he destroyed false ideas (newton's ideas) during the process, but he built a new idea with a more accurate description of nature, leaving the theory of relativity as a Product. Science as a product – Whatever information or ideas we acquire through various processes of science form the product of science. The basic components of the product of science are facts, concepts, principles, theories & laws. Science as both a process and a product – Science is both a body of knowledge & the process of acquiring it. Science is both a verb & a noun. These two aspects are interdependent & inseparable.
