Autism is a developmental disability that affects communication and social skills, occurring in 1 in 100 births and more commonly in males. There is no known cause or cure. Early diagnosis and intervention are key so therapy can begin and help individuals lead meaningful lives. Autism was first researched in the 1930s and involves difficulties with social skills, language, sensory stimuli, and behaviors. Diagnosis typically occurs around ages 2-3 when delays become obvious. While the cause is unknown, researchers are exploring genetics, vaccines, and environmental factors. Treatment varies but can include applied behavior analysis, relationship development intervention, physical/occupational/speech therapy, and more. With support, autistic individuals can live happy lives.
