The document discusses the genetics behind autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It notes that while the genetics are complex, research suggests both genetic and environmental factors play a role. Studies of twins have found concordance rates between 56-95% in identical twins, suggesting a strong genetic component. Chromosomal abnormalities like deletions, duplications, and inversions have also been linked to ASD. The document examines different genetic studies of autism in twins, siblings, and families that provide evidence for a genetic basis of ASD. It concludes that autism likely has both genetic and environmental causes.

Different people with autism can have very different symptoms. Health care providers think of autism as a “spectrum” disorder, a group of disorders with similar features. One person may have mild symptoms, while another may have serious symptoms. But they both have an autism spectrum disorder.
Currently, the autism spectrum disorder category includes:
-- Autistic disorder (also called “classic” autism)
-- Asperger syndrome
-- Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (or atypical autism)
In some cases, health care providers use a broader term, pervasive developmental disorder, to describe autism. This category includes the autism spectrum disorders above, plus Childhood Disintegrative Disorder and Rett syndrome.
Pervasive developmental disorder are characterized by severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development: reciprocal social interaction skills, communication skills, or the presence of stereotyped behavior, interests, and activities.

Genetics of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd)Joy Maria Mitchell
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder. ADHD is the commonly studied and
diagnosed as psychiatric disorder. Here we shall see the relation between extraversion and ADHD, neuroticism,
biological relation, Environmental factors and with diagnosis of ADHD. It is known that Genetics is one of the factors
that may contribute to, or exacerbate ADHD. Recent research probing towards the environmental and Genetic factors
causing ADHD differences is the main source for investigation
EMOTIONAL REGULATION AND COGNITIVE FLEXIBILITY AS PREDICTORS OF MATERNAL ACCE...indexPub
Raising a child with autism poses distinct challenges for parents. Maternal acceptance of the diagnosis and associated behaviors promotes positive family adaptation. This study aimed to examine emotional regulation and cognitive flexibility as intrapsychic predictors of maternal acceptance among Saudi mothers of autistic children. A sample of 50 mothers completed self-report measures of emotional regulation, cognitive flexibility, and acceptance. Correlation analysis found significant positive associations between emotional regulation, cognitive flexibility, and acceptance. Regression analysis indicated both emotional regulation and cognitive flexibility as significant positive predictors of maternal acceptance, with emotional regulation evidencing a stronger relationship. These results empirically validate theorized links between coping capacities and acceptance that have previously been established primarily through qualitative research. Findings also extend the predominantly Western literature by demonstrating relevance within a novel Saudi cultural context. This research provides guidance for designing psychosocial interventions to assist families managing autism globally. Targeting parental emotional regulation and flexible thinking may improve acceptance and adaptation across cultures.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Autism is a neurodevelopmental
disorder characterized by impaired
social interaction, verbal and non-
verbal communication and
restricted and repetitive behavior.
AUTISM
4. GENETICS BEHIND IT
• The genetics of autism is complex and it is unclear
whether autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is explained
more by multigene interactions or by rare mutations with
major effects.
• It is seen that the effects are not just genetic in nature ,
rather have some environmental implications too.
• Thus treatment of autism is a complex diagnosis to make.
5. It has been seen that Deletion (1), duplication (2) and inversion (3) are all
chromosome abnormalities that have been implicated in autism and are
considered a cause of ASDs
6. REASONS BEHIND THE
GENETIC APPROACH
• Autism and twins
• Prodigies share genetic
mutation with people with
autism
• Paternal link
• Sibling studies
7. • One of the best ways of understanding what effect genes do
• The researchers found that 56 percent – 95 percent of the
effect is estimated to be genetic, according to a study of 258
twins suggests.
• Genetic influences on autism are estimated to be between
74-98 percent according to research by the Medical Research
Council in the UK.
8. A small scale study in 1977 was the first of its kind to
look into the heritability of autism. It involved 10 DZ
and 11 MZ pairs in which at least one twin in each
pair showed infantile autism. It found a concordance
of 36% in MZ twins compared to 0% for DZ twins.
Concordance of "cognitive abnormalities" was 82%
in MZ pairs and 10% for DZ pairs.
In 12 of the 17 pairs discordant for autism, a
biological hazard was believed to be associated with
the condition
9. A study of 99 autistic probands which found a 2.9% concordance
for autism in siblings, and between 12.4% and 20.4%
concordance for a "lesser variant" of autism.
A study of 31 siblings of autistic children, 32 siblings of children
with developmental delay, and 32 controls. It found that the
siblings of autistic children, as a group, "showed superior spatial
and verbal span, but a greater than expected number
performed poorly on the set-shifting, planning, and verbal
fluency tasks."
11. AUTISM AND ASDs are very intriguing diseases where the cause
has still not been finalised and thus research is still on.
The genetic side to this disease will surely if proven to be true
have an impact on the medical action taken.
By far whatever we have achieved just leads us to believe that
autism has a genetic as well an environmental cause, and when
all these factors act up, it leads to the disease as we know it.
